You can tell I am new to the 4.6. Just when I thought I understood the windsor family, now I have to figure out the mod family!! Could someone please explain the difference between a motor like the 289, the sohc 4.6 I have, and the 4.6 dohc? Is the cam on top of the valvetrain? If there is a cam for each head on the 2V sohc, then why is it called single overhead cam? Wouldn't that mean only one cam for the motor? I'll just stop pulling my hair out, take a deep breath, and let one of use' guys' fill me in. Thanks in advance for the most basic 4.6 question ever!!!

Wow, suprised no one has answered this yet. Here's my 2 cents on the topic. The 289 is an Overhead Valve (OHV) type engine. One cam in the middle of the block that operates all the valves via lifters, pushrods and rocker arms. The 4.6 SOHC has one cam on top of each head (total of two cams) above the valves that operates both intake and exhaust valves via followers. 1 cam per head = SOHC. The 4.6 DOHC has two cams on the top of each head (total of 4 cams) above the valves . One operates the intake valves the other the exhaust valves again via followers. 2 cams per head = DOHC. This is my understanding of the matter but since I'm no mechanic it may not be entirely correct.

This is something I've kinda wondered too.More importantly, how are the OHCs driven? I know how the OHV cams are driven...one of the timing sprockets (?) is connected to the cam, which turns...is it kinda the same thing for the OHCs? A chain or belt runs up to each head to turn the cams? ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project
