It looks like I am at the mercy of Ford on this one. When I bought the '99, the dealership only had the one key. So I checked at Ford about getting another key cut a few weeks ago...they said it's $21 to cut the key. Then I just asked about a remote, and they told me $50 for the remote.Mom said she'd give me half to get the key done, so she gave me the money this weekend and I stopped by Ford again this afternoon after work. They neglected to tell me that since I only had the one key, they'd need to program the new one once it was cut...for another $60! Ouch! And take an hour to do so. Ooof. Ah well, I do need a spare key to give to dad or mom for those "just in case" instances. Gone are the days of just going down to the local hardware store and getting a spare key cut for $1 or so...heh. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

OUCH!When my brother bought his 2000 vert (it was a rollback vehicle, and it too only had one key), I made sure they would provide a second key and an alarm remote at no charge. I'm glad I did, now! Stewart

The manual that came with the GT gives instructions on reprogramming the remotes about 3 pages worth. The also suggest not placing any other keys on the same ring with the ignition key, due to possible interferrence with the electronics. Too sophisticated for me Mike

Yeah, that's the remotes. That's the easy part. I figured I'd pass on the remote from Ford, get one off eBay or something for like less than half what Ford's asking, and program the remote myself. The key was a different story. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

You're getting raped Frank. It takes all of about 3 1/2 minutes to program one of those keys.

Well, what's actually involved in programming the key anyway? I know the remote only needs a few turns of the key in the ignition switch, then push the remote's button. What exactly do they do to program the chip in the key?And if it's something insanely easy, I'm gonna have to go smack the tar outta Ford for charging so much. Of course, the other dealer that's closer to the house may be a different story... ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

Yeah, you need 2 good keys to program a third key.
