I'm having to replace at least one tire on my 2000 GT already (10,000 miles) - there is a 1" X 3/8" piece of tread missing, all the way down to the steel belting. This is probably not the fault of the tire, but rather of where I live. I live in the country & probably cut the tire on a rock or something spinning in my muddy driveway.

The tires are BFG COMP TA P225/55 R16 94H M+S. Are these good tires? Are there better tires of the same size etc. for roughly the same money?

If these are OK tires, then I only have to replace one. If I need to go with better tires, then I need to replace two for now.

My rims are 16 X 8.5. Wonder how P235 (or bigger) /50's would work on them? The tires would be slightly wider & taller.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

BF Goodrich makes great tires. I'd just replace the bad one and roll on.

Jon,

Comp T/A's are very good tires. Maybe not the best anymore, but at one time they were. And they are certainly still one of the top tires out there.

I had Comp T/A's on my 5.0 till I had to replace one because of a nail, and the subsequent damage to the tire. I couldn't get Comp T/A's the day it happened so now I'm running with 2 BFG's and 2 Kumo's.

Joe:

I've had no problems with the Comp TA's on my '00, but to add my two cents, if you live in an area with rougher roads, I'd give some of the Michelins a look. I've found Michelins to be virtually indestructable on my wife's '93 Taurus wagon - no matter what she does to them. Michelins tend to use tougher rubber compounds which result in a stonger and better wearing tire, but the trade off is they're a bit noisier and rougher/harder riding. The X-One's on the wagon have over 43,000 on them and they still have lots of life left. Michelins might be better suited to the demands of the roads you drive on, as opposed to the TA's, which tend to be a little softer and thus less resistent to damage. Hope this info helps - Good luck..........

Joe, thanks for your input / advice. I went ahead and did the most economical thing for now - I ordered 1 direct replacement tire. We'll see how that goes for now.

Actually, the roads around here are OK, it's my driveway that sux.

I'd have to think about the Mich's real hard, though. I've had about a 50% failure rate with the dozen or so Michelins I've owned. I don't know what it is (just me, maybe?); everybody else swears by them; I swear AT them.
Thanks, though, I always appreciate advice & the time & effort it takes to give it.

See ya, and thanks again,
-JC

I've had great luck with Michelins.

Pam used to have a '91 Escort GT and the first tires, Goodyear Eagles wore out by 20k miles. I replaced them with Michelins and when we traded the car at 80k miles, they still looked brand new!

I used to have a '76 Capri Black Magic with a set of Michelins on it, and when I bought the car at 46k the original owner told me the tires were original. They still looked brand new when I totalled the car at 64k miles. { }

Yeah, Steve; I don't know what the deal is. That's what everyone says. But they failed on a 72 Le Mans I had, I couldn't buy 'em quick enough for my Linc TC (I finally quit buying them and went to something else), and I think one failed on the Volvo 850 my wife had (and that was a special tire made for that car, read $$$).

'Course, Michelin makes BFGs now...
