Just an FYI for all you '94-'00 owners with manual trannys - Word has it that 430,000 or so cars built between '94 and '00 with manual trannys will be recalled for a problem with the parking brake. Heard that the parking brake has "let go" causing some cars to "roll" into other, non-forgiving objects. My local dealer said that they haven't seen details of the recall from Ford yet but expect to see something this month. There is something on the NHTSA recall database about it though, for anyone who wants to take a look. Funny thing though - the recommended course of action until a fix is done is to advise owners to leave their cars in 1st gear along with the parking brake on. I don't know about most of you out there, but I never leave my car parked without doing both anyway. Therefore - Are some people just leaving cars parked with the parking brake on only? That would see kind of risky to me............. ------------------ Joe C. 2000 V6 Convertible

Hello Joe. I suspect that people were leaving the cars running with the parking brake on, then getting out to listen to the engine. My local dealer says parts for the recall won't even be available until mid-December.

I have a friend with a 96GT and his intake cracked for the 2nd time. He took it to the dealer to get it warrantied and they said they fixed his brakes for the recall at the same time. Maybe they were just BS'ing him...------------------ Dave95GT http://dave95gt.stangnet.com

I called the dealership earlier today and they told me that they didnt even know exactly what the fix was going to be. The tech said he had read about it on the internet, but thats all that he knew. He thought it might have something to do with the actual lever and mechanism. Oh well, guess Im waiting for my letter.------------------ Dave95GT http://dave95gt.stangnet.com

For anyone interested, the official NHTSA recall information is as follows (see recall database at www.nhtsa.dot.gov): NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 00V349000 Component: EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKE:MECHANICAL Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY Potential Number of Units Affected: 434000 Manufactured From: OCT 1993 To: OCT 2000 Summary: "Passenger vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. If a vehicle is parked with the parking brake not fully applied and is not in first gear, as directed in the Owner Guide, and the self adjustment pawl subsequently skips one or two teeth, the vehicle could move on some grades. This could result in unitended vehicle movement and a vehicle crash without prior warning. Dealers will modify the parking brake control and install a plate or over-braket to the control to lock the self adjust mechanism in position following adjustment. Owner notification is expected to begin during Novemeber 2000. Owners who take their vehicle to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236." ------------------ Joe C. 2000 V6 Convertible

Well I got the brake recall done on my 95 the other day. It took them about hal the day and all they did was make an adjustment at the parking brake mechanism. The pedal feels the same, but there is a bit more tension when I pulled the handle. Big deal..------------------ Dave95GT http://dave95gt.stangnet.com http://austinareastangs.com

I have installed so many of these parking brake recalls that I can do them in my sleep! What we have to do is remove the center console, remove the parking brake handle assembly cut off a metal tab and install the new retainig braket. You kind of have to see it to know what I'm really talking about. I've only had 1 Mustang in that claimed body damage to the car from failure of parking brake. but I don't really belive the guy I think he wanted the scrape fixed for free.
