What kind of things can I do to make the AOD a little stronger and more reliable in a 3200-3700 lb vehicle with a mild 302? Figured I'd ask here, since so many of the Fox body cars came with AOD's.

BorgMoose7of9, How much did that cost? how does the car drive now? what gears are you running? will it shift well into OD at WOT over 5000 RPMs? is this your daily driver?

Make certain to sand blast the Kolene steels before use in a high performance application.
If not, you see some unwanted slippage.

Sorry, I hardly ever check this forum...lol.

The AOD? I have around $1500 in parts, including convertor and fluid. I was running 4.11 gears in a 5000 lbs. van. Gear rpm drops were uniform, 1-2 and 2-3 were exact, and the 3-4 shift was a couple of hundred rpm below that. It would shift into OD after 5000 rpm, and it was a nice, crisp shift, but nothing that would snap the driveshaft. I towed with it few times, no problems, but I did go through 4 valve bodies trying to get something to work right. If I had the extra $430(shipping included in price), I would have purchased a Lentech valve body and been done with it. The AOD valve bodies are garbage, and it is difficult to get them to work right. Get the Baumann shift kit, I am not sure I like the Transgo HP kit too well(may be more the valve body problems than shift kit).

How does it drive? The 1-2 shift at full throttle shook the whole van, and the 2-3 shift was just about as hard. However, it shifted nice at part throttle, also, so it would not be annoying to drive all the time.

What would I do differently? Well, for a heavy vehicle, I would do the 4R70W low gear kit ($600 from Ford), and if this is installed in a lighter car, I would just use stock clutch discs and steels in the low and reverse clutch baskets. I wanted it to be indestructible for towing, however, and went all out.

Finally:
Honestly, If I had a mustang, and knew how to drive a 5-speed, I would just get a Tremec TR 3550 or TKO, as the money will add up for the Auto trannies....Companies like Baumann and others are now trying to kill off the AOD's in favor of the more $$$ AODE's......Most AODE's are starting off at around $3500, and how many TKO's can you buy with that?
