have a 87 mustang 2.3 2300 4 cyl. dist. cap was completely off with no wires or plugs. the only # under the cap is # 4 does this represent the #4 cyl.? and do i put this part where the #4 is stamped on the rotor? all im getting is backfire. getting good compression. just dont know. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Well, the cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4 from front to rear and the firing order is 1-3-4-2.

Bring the motor to Top Dead Center for #1 and the rotor will be pointing at the #1 terminal on the distributor. Rotate the motor in normal direction to see which direction the distributor rotates.

yep, got it. dead on, still runs like crap so..... i just pulled the head and i have a bent valve. so i guess ill be seating valves tomorrow evening.valve cover was a little sludgy, but not bad and pvc needs to be cleaned. but what do you expect from a $400.00 car.?

That it'll have an engine with a bent valve, sludgy gunk under the valve cover and pvc needs to be cleaned.....

hehehe, no bent valve compadre, blown head gasket. replaced and runs faster than my 68 'stang. ($400.00 car just turned into a $800.00 car)valves were ok.
