This might be long, but I gotta know. I am looking at a 1984 Merc Capri supposedly an RS. It has an RS front nose and an RS hood, but there are no RS emblems in the interior. The body was recently repainted, so no striping. It's at a dealer. I didn't get to open it up because it was Sun. An ad for that dealer lists it as an RS with the 5L AOD. It does have the grey Mustang GT type face plate on the dash. You see I think it could be a GS with RS parts added on. I am trying to get as much info on what an '84 RS should have that would be different from a GS. Is there anything on the door sticker that would indicate and RS from a GS?? Here is the VIN: 1MEBP79M8EF609245. I know the 8th digit is for the HO 302. Is there any other useful info here?? The only noticable options are: A/C, cruise, rear def, and AM/FM radio. Window sticker says it needs brake work, the A/C doesn't work and the gas gauge doesn't work. Has a sunroof; not sure if it is OEM. Has 97341 miles on odo. Undercarriage looks excellent; no rust holes and no patch work. Asking price on win sticker is $3995, ad in paper $2995. Between NADA, Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds the highest price for an RS is $2375, GS is $1675. Also, it has plain stock 14 inch rims with cheap Walmart wheel covers. Just trying to get all the ammo I need for a good argument (i.e. price reduction). Thanx for any tips.Pepse.

Our racecar was originally an RS Turbo. The only difference in VIN is your M8 vs our W1. I doubt that the sunroof is original and it probably came with Michelin metric radials with the ugly 3 bar metric wheels.

OK, I did finally get on the Capri-list and got an answer to this. What I am looking at is a low end Capri RS, where-in the wheels would have been the standard Ford rims with 205/70R14 tires. Being that it has cruise it has the "A" style steering wheel. And apparently by '84 there was no RS markings in the interior. Just body stickers. The part of the VIN with 79M means RS with the HO 302, and being the AOD it should be CFI not a 4BBL. Still a very good deal ifr I can get him to see the light. And yeah, I mentioned the sunroof because something just didn't look right; just a hunch I guess. I'll let you know what happens.Later. Pepse.
