Beatcha to it, Max. Been talking with Mike (fishtail) for the past few hours, and this was one of the things we've been pondering. No definitive answer....yet! Stewart [This message has been edited by Stewart (edited 09-16-2002).]

Hmmm I should ask, why are you asking? This is something I"m not sure of...I know that all 87 and up 5.0s are the reverse rotation pump. My friend just got an 85GT, so once I poke around under that hood I'll be able to verify if the older fox's have the threaded pump, or the reverse rotation pump. But at this point I'm going to have to say that I don't know offhand. I'll look around some, if I come across the answer, I'll be sure to post it.------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. ok did some checking. Looks like my gut was semi right. I told stew that I think 85 would be different since it got the roller motor(hence 84 and prior). I was both right and wrong. They list both for that year(so they are different sorta), and they list 6 and 8 ribbed pullies. So, it looks like 85 is your number and you need to be careful with the selection. 86 and up should all have the reverse rotation pump since they are all the SEFI motor(even though there are cam/tb/head/piston differences). ------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. I may be wrong, but I always thought that all the V8 Mustangs from 79 up used the serpentine belt with a reverse rotation water pump.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed 59 Meteor (Canadian Ford) 2 dr sedan 332, auto 74 F350 ramp truck 390 4spd

Indeed, I did a lot of searching in parts manuals and books looking for a stock pulley setup for the 82-up balancer. (I needed it for my Maverick). All 79-up Mustangs ran a serpentine belt. All 79-up Mustangs ran reverse rotation water pumps. By definition, this means they had to have a smooth pulley. You can't have a ribbed pulley turn backwards. The trucks ran v-belt setups until they went to reverse rotation water pumps as well (in 1986 I believe for the 302). But your holy grail the full size Ford ran a regular rotation water pump until the 4.6 came along (1991). So you can find a ribbed serpentine belt pulley there. ------------------ -Charlie Ping 1970 Maverick Grabber [email protected] with AC and overdrive. http://www.maverickgrabber.com

Charlie is correct on all except the trucks. 85 351 was still "V" belt, 302 went to serpentime. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA/MCA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."

Ok thats odd, because I went onto carparts.com last night and started looking up waterpumps until I found one with ribbed pullies. They list a standard rotation water pump with a ribbed pulley for 1985. I guess I need a new way to verify things ------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Max, a serpentine belt is sometimes called the fan belt. It's the belt hooked to all those accessory pullies and crank pully on the front of your engine. Stewart

LOL, well not really.....but I was trying to come up with an answer for something I didn't know quickly, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. Although, being that I work at a garage, and knowing how often we get the wrong parts from parts houses even though it's what they list....I should know better. Live and learn I don't apparently .------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Just for Boss302's benefit, the "serpentine" was a slang shop term for that "new fangled" belt that "snaked" it's way through the front of your engine. That from an old Ford mechanic buddy of mine when asked on the origination of the word... Either way, it means the same thing, I've always known it as a serpentine... guess old terms are starting to fade... --mark

Actually Brandon, everyone else here is full of sh*t. A serpantine belt is made from snake skin. It has far better adhesion and wear characteristics than the normal rubber belts. Haven't you ever heard of snake skin boots? They last forever. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator/ non 65-66 Mustang owner sensitivity co-ordinator NHRA/IHRA/SRA/MCA member NHRA and IHRA SS/LA National Record Holder '00, '01, & '02 Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 Part time secret agent license #0089 Professional Manwhore The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
