I had to cut the exhaust off the passenger side from the H-pipe back on my 1987 Mustang GT this morning. I'd been holding out replacing it, as I was hoping FRPP would start shipping their low-cost stainless system. I've already got the Ford Motorsport stainless steel shorty headers and 2 1/4" off-road (no catalytic converters) H-pipe. After a (not so) quick search of the web it looks like Borla, Bassani, and Magnaflow are the only companies offering stainless steel cat-back systems for the '87 GT. Magnaflow appears to be the cheapest at $400 or so but it may also be the loudest. The Mustang is my daily driver and with no catalytic converters, I don't want a really loud muffler. Bassani has a "quiet thunder" system with removable baffles and may be the quietest. The best price I've found on Borla is $500. Not sure on Bassani. Anyone had any experience with these systems? Dan Jones P.S. The car sounds really bad with 4 cylinders muffled and 4 unmuffled. I had to drive it in this morning as the Pantera's battery was dead.

A few years ago, I put a Walker/Dynomax cat-back on my little brother's 86 5.0 LX... sounds real good and was a bargin, just under $200 if I remember correctly. It isn't stainless, it's aluminized; it's been almost three years and it's holding up great Don't remember the p/n, but I ordered it from Summit.

Thanks but I really want to go with stainless steel. I've seen too many aluminized systems rot out quickly. I'm looking to keep the car for another 10+ years and drive it in snow and rain. Dan Jones

Doesn't Edelbrock make a 409 stainless cat back setup for an '87?

No, it's aluminized. Several manufacturers have stainless tips or stainless mufflers, but the pipes are still aluminized. Dan Jones

You know the Aerospace guys have inconel and Hastalloy tubing laying around..... If you knew anyone like that, you would have an immortal exhaust system

Yeah, I miss being out in the shop. At one time I had access to CNC lathes, Milling machines, and all the scrap metal. There was a big hunk of tungsten that Dave would have lovd to have for balancing cranks.Dan Jones
