I'm looking at a 69 Mustang that the lady says is a 69 Mach 1 . How can I tell that it just isn't a fastback with Mach 1 goodies? The VIN in 69 only tells you that in 69 it is a fastback (02 body serial code is on the tag) In 70 Mach's have their own 05 in the VIN but not in 69. How can I tell?, Shoe

Shoe, I thought the 05 code applies to 69 through 73 models and you can also check the door data plate 69 & 70's should have a body code of 63C. ------------------ 69 351W Sportsroof Deluxe

If it has a body type code of 63C it is designated Mach I. I got this from the "Mustang Secret Decoder Book", which ID's door and build tags. This body code was the same in '70 according to the book.

I've been going by a Mustangs & Fords magazine March 2001. They say 63C is a sports roof /standard interior/bench seat for 69 & 70 models. It also states 1970 only that 05 means Mach 1 & in 1969 02 just means fastback. So according to them ,any fastback in 1969 or Mach 1 has a 63C That's what is so confusing And it really doesn't tell if I have the real thing or not, Shoe

The sourc I quoted is published by W>L> Durban Publishing. If you're not satisfied with what's in print, {mistakes can be made} call Perogie in NJ, or Semo Mustang in Missouri. Their word is impeccable. If you're STILL not satisfied, call Marti Auto Works in Ariz. and give him the vin no. over the phone. It'll cost you a few bucks but its worth it. Marti is a sponsor. See homepage. Hey, guy, better safe than sorry. M&Fords is not always right. I've even seen them get the year wrong!! I always remember Jim Smart, while at MMonthly, writing that early Mustangs were painted with lacquer!!

In addition to the 63C body code, a 69 Mach1 will have a 2 digit paint code, denoting the body color AND the black out hood.Example M5 would be Wimbelton White with black hood, where a regular Mustang would just be M for W White. Also 69 Mach1`s never came with 6 cyl`s or 302s, so the engine code shouldn`t be a "T","H", or "F".------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed

A few mistakes in here. 1st, "H" code was the 351-2V Windsor in '69 (base/standard equipment Mach 1 engine), so there are MANY MANY H-code '69 Mach 1's. F, T & L are "no performance" codes that would rule out a Mach, and of course G & Z mean you're really lucky and looking at a Boss. "63C" is indeed certain proof for a Mach 1 in '69. There is no such thing as a body code for sportroof w/bench seat in 1969. If you notice in Marti's "By the Numbers", not a single solitary sportroof or convertible was produced with a bench seat in '69. "65C" was the code for coupe w/bench, and the only way you could get a bench in '69 was in the "65C" coupe body. If Mustang & Ford says "63C" stands for anything other than Mach 1, they are wrong, and perhaps confused in thinking that "since 65C was code for bench seat in a coupe in '69, then 63C and 76C must be bench seat as well". That would be a false assumption.

Thanks Ricks, That pretty well tells it like it is . Funny they should say 63C means exactly what I said they did say Sportsroof/Standard interior/bench seat, I guess you can't believe everything you read (even in a Ford magizine), I was sure myself that they never put a bench seat in a sportsroof or Mach. I'm sure I got a Mach 1 coming then ,cause she did say it was a 63C body style tag number. Thanks all who replied. Shoe

SOMEONE ONCE TOLD ME THAT A MACH HAD A DIFFERENT COLOR HIGH BEAM INDICATOR THAN A REG STANG. IN THE PARTS CATOLOG THEY LIST TWO DIFFERENT JEWELS BUT DOESN'T SAY WHAT COLOR. DID ANYONE ELSE EVER HEAR THIS. ALSO 63C IS A MACH IN THE FORD PARTS CATOLOG. A REGULAR MUSTANG FASTBACK SAYS STD. 63A AND LUXURY 63B. RAY------------------ RAY . Shoe, The $17 to Kevin Marti for the standard report could be the best money spent. Door tags can be reproduced, the report will tell you if it is a true mach 1. Would hate to see someone pay the price for a mach 1 and get nothing more than a standard sportsroof. ------------------ Ronnie 69 mach1 351W-4V 70 Torino GT 351C-4v with a "shaker" Mustangs and More Member #23

WHOOOPS! I mistakenly listed a "H" engine code for a 250 6 cyl, what I meant was a "L" code. Of course a "H" is the 351 2 barrel. As for the high beam indicator light, I know that my plain interior Sportsroof , with the "camera case" insturment panel, used a running horse cut out for the high beam indicator, while all my 69-70 Mach1`s had a simple round red circle for the high beams. And in 69, both Mach1`s & regular Sportsroofs had 02 as the body model in the VIN #, while 70 was the first year the Mach1 got its own designation of 05, while the Sportsroof retained the 02 code.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA Stocker under construction, 302 5 speed
