Looking to update my steering column for several reasons. Any ideas on a late OEM unit or over the counter model that will adapt easily and well to the shaft or 58 gearbox.Has anybody tried anything that has worked good for them? Not concerned about wiring issues. Will be a floor shift automatic.

Usually the swap is done with a GM column and the fancy aluminum aftermarkets are fashioned after GM. Unfortunately, I do not speak either GM or Spanglish. If you want to keep it FORD, you have to determine if you want tilt wheel, tilt column or the ignition switch on the dash or column to start.

Are you aware that the 50`s Fords have the steering shaft as part of the steering box? It is about 4 feet long, so to use a later column with a stock steering box would entail cutting the shaft down, and coming up with some form of coupler arangement. If you mainly want to do this to get rid of the column shift, the shifter is on a seperate rod, above the steering shaft tube, and is easily removed, which makes for a clean look.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Good Point Rory! And you would need the block off plate for the shift indicator if automatic. -Stock Column Modifications- -Columns Galore- I was think 64 TBIRD myself... ------------------ I am looking for information concerning factory performance/aftermarket speed parts (1958/1960) used on the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) (Also Thunderbird 59/60) Engine Series (383-410-430-462) produced from 1958 thru 1968.
