No they are not. This is one of the things that started all the buzzing.

Subject- 1956 MERCURY 312CI M 260 Option

Installation as shown in subject car;

Actual factory release photo (from magazine) sent to me by a very kind gentleman;

(This photo quality may be poor as I had to cut an illustration of a 317 PONTIAC 2X4 as per board rules.)

Can you see the difference in the air cleaners and fuel filter (upside down) just for starters?

Rocker cover color is incorrect also. The scheme shown was for the 235 HP cam upgrade from the stock 225 HP (running production).

CORRECTION:

Well...As I think about this last statement...I could be wrong. Actually the car could have come assembled as a 235HP before the M 260 upgrade.

A gentleman from ENGLAND must have seen my post over on the IMOA board and sent me the picture. Really nice of him as it answers what air cleaner came on the option. The parts list calls for two cleaners. Seems to me some aftermarkets were available that looked similiar.

That gas filter just sold on Ebay. The seller claimed it was supposed to mount with glass up. Which way is right.

That's more like what I thought I had remembered from my model car building days.

Well, on the M 260 option, it is glass bowl down as shown in the factory release photo. Now, on another board that I frequent, is a knowledgeable person that works in a BIRD restoration shop and says they are installed upside down on the 4V 312. I have found an illustration in an older FORD specific text that shows the BIRD E-CODE (8V) as having a metal cannister filter mounted right above the water pump.

I just don't understand why they would have assembled them inverted as when you go to change the element it is going to make a nasty mess...

I am not sure at this point. I know the M 260 option is down. The below photo shows a '57 BIRD restoration (not dedicated as it shows a SANDEN air compressor). But I have other shots that show the glass bowl down on the '57 4V (and is placed ahead of the intake manifold like the F-Code 8V, even though the F-Code utilizes a metal cannister type with a metal bowl). Maybe the 55/56 was inverted?

The filter was mounted on the bottom of the fuel pump on the FORD so there must have been a clearance problem on the BIRD.

Now I have a '58 MERC 383 photo (appears to be factory) that has the bowl inverted.

Just another one of those factory detail thingies to drive you crazy. That is why I would never try a dedicated restoration...They would have to put me in the Loonie Bin...

FYI, GM did the same thing with the glass filters.
I just saw an old late 50's Poncho Tri-Power.
Single carb applications were one way, and multiple were inverted. Odd isn't it.

One reason for the glass sediment bowl was to be able to watch for trash and water. If it is inverted, what is the use?
