My dad's 55 Ford rear end is becoming very noisy and will need to be replaced. It looks similar to a nine inch (although not a nine-inch --that came in 57). Are these rebuildable? Are there good used rear-end sources out there? Would it be easier in the long run to upgrade to a nine-inch? Anyone else had experience with this?
It's a Y block, 3spd+OD, and a 3.73 rear ratio.
Thanks...
Daniel

If it's all stock you could just get the parts from places like Mac's Antique Auto. They should have most of the parts needed for a rebuild. A nine inch rear may need some fabrication work to slip under the '55, plus the driveshaft may need some work done to it.

All these places should carry parts for the '55

Didn't 57/8 wagons come with a 9" housing?

All '57 Ford's that had a V8 had 9" rears, from Customs, Fairlanes, wagons, to trucks.
