I have a Monagram 49 Merc. that is in it's original box. I know that it's the original issue. Does it have any value other than price of a model?

It depends. Is it complete? Unopened? It probably is worth some money. I'd say about 30-35 dollars if opened, maybe over 100 if sealed. Can you tell what year it was issued?

When that kit was originally issued (around 1963), they didn't seal the kits. They had two small pieces of tape keeping the box closed. Does it have decals????Tracy

I don't think that is was wrapped when I got it- Probably tape sealed. It has been opened but not taken out of box. What decals are we talking about? It's not where I can grab it at the moment but will check. Thanks for the info. Will get back.

If it's that old,I'm sure it has some real value. Tracy, are you a model expert? I'm impressed. How many do you have?

I quit counting a long time ago. One day I'll ge around to building most of them (when I have a place to buid and display them). They're in the top of my closet, under my bed, under and next to my desk. Easily over 300! I have a friend who has been building kits since the first ones came out in the late 50's!Mellowyellow, are you sure that's a Monogram kit? Is it an AMT kit? This is the original issue (1963): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1757977721 Tracy

Now I'm not sure. I do know that the color of the plastic is black. Maybe it is a later one. Am sure that I couldn't have bought it after early 70's. I may have a couple others but haven't looked in the storage boxes in quite a time.

I've probably built that many, but I only have about 30 left. I either gave them away, parted them or tossed them. Some did suffer ill fates, like fires and carbombings.

AMT used light blue, gray and black plastic in 1963 and some of 1964. Does your box look like the one in the auction? That box could have had a black plastic kit in it.Tracy

Tracy: Well, this AM went up and ran the gauntlet of parts to the furthest possible corner to open a model box. The 49 Merc kit box is identical to the one on ebay. Yes, two tiny pieces of tape-now open, kept box closed. Stock # is 02-349-149 which tells me it's old as 1.49 was the price, I believe. Yes, it does have decals and instructions and plastic is black. Other finds included a 62 Corvette(with cellophane) AMT stock/modified, and another identical one opened. A Revell 57 Nomad, unassembled, opened but complete with instructions., A 59 Corvette, modified, complete unassembled but no instructions, An AMT unbuilt 32 Ford Vicky, unassembled but no instructions, I think there may be another box.

Sounds like you've got some cool stuff there. Get them out of the attic so the heat doesn't ruin them anymore than it might have already! The tires and plastic don't get along too well. I've seen many old built models with wheels and tires melted together by the chemical reaction between the two materials. When the kits stay in boxes for years, if a tire is resting on a piece of plastic, it will melt into the piece. I know some people here in Nashville who might be interested in your models if you're thinking about selling them. One friend of mine who runs a hobby shop has recently been building the "box art" cars that are shown on the original boxes. And guess what? He's looking for a '49 Merc with the decals!(You can click on the email icon above this box to email me.) Tracy
