A few weeks ago I was at a SVTOA event at IRP (Indianapolis Raceway Park) It was two days of high speed track touring on the road course. Ford brought down both a Ford GT and an '05 Mustang GT for display as well as allowing seclected participants to drive. Since I was one of the driving instructors I was allowed to drive both the Ford GT (4 laps) and the '05 Mustang (8 laps). My impression of the Mustang was that it had very good power, Not as quick as the '03-'04 Mustang Cobra but not far behind. The handling was very good. The car I drove had performance all-season tires, (Not the tires that will come with the GT). I think Ford did this to keep the cornering speeds down. That was fine with me. The car would understeer a bit and with the use of the throttle I could balance the car and achieve some 4 wheel drifts through 2 of IRPs turns.
This was both fun for me and entertaining to the passengers I was giving rides to.
My 4 laps in the Ford GT was an eye opener. On my 3rd and 4th laps I was hitting 130 mph on the drag strip straight in 4th gear with the engine below redline and I still had 5th & 6th unused. Can you say 200 mph!
