While I was under my 80 Merc. Bobcat 4 cyl. I noticed a large letter N cast into the upper pinion area does this mean its a nodular casting like the 9"? ( mines a 7" or so, nothing heavy duty or special}if it is a nodular is that rare?

Most likely yes, I doubt it's much special though. The heavy duty applications in MIIs got the 8" rear.
