My wife's Dad sold us his 76 Mustang for a buck. How do I tell if it's a II or a Ghia? To tell the truth, until I started to check into restoring it, I thought a Ghia was made by Karman, as in Karman Ghia, or something like that.

Well, it is a Mustang II...because all Mustangs between 1974-1978 are Mustang IIs.

The Italian design studio, Ghia, was acquired by Ford in 1971. Ford started using the Ghia moniker on various vehicles after that.

The Mustang II Ghia was a luxury sort of version of the Mustang II. It's typically identifiable by some sort of vinyl roof (either half or full, depending on year), woodgrain dashboard treatments, chrome bodyside moldings with vinyl inserts, and usually some fancy wheel pattern. Also, Ghia badges are most likely on the vinyl roof on the C-pillar.

My '77, pictured at the top of the forum, is a Ghia.

PS: They were only available on coupes. I don't think a hatchback MII Ghia ever made production, though there was at least a prototype made.

PPS: Also, the big tell-tale sign...the VIN! if the third and fourth digits are "04", then it is a Ghia. Ghias and Mach 1s were the only "specialty" models that got their own identifier code in the VIN.

I know I'm r3esurecting an old post, but I just reread IIDood's reply about identifying the Ghia.
Our '74 has the 1/2 white vinyl roof, chrome side trim, etc., but no badges identifying it as a Ghia, and the only 4 in the VIN is the first number. Third and fourth are "02" so does that mean it's a Coupe?

Yes, it is a coupe. Some coupes were outfitted with the vinyl roof as well, but did not receive some of the other Ghia appointments.

A quick breakdown of what third and fourth digit VIN codes mean:

02: coupe
03: hatchback
04: Ghia
05: Mach 1

There were no special codes for the Cobra IIs or King Cobras; they were just sort of "add on" packages to the hatchbacks. Cobras and KCs will have "03" in the VIN, obviously.

Thanks for the info. Now I know all I have to do is try to find some parts, especially windshield, driver & passenger windows, rear window and one of teh opera window glass. Then new carpets, some floor panels (not too sure which ones yet), get some seat repairs done.
And find out what's wrong with the engine (2.3 Litre).
