I had posted the below on the 79 and up board with no definite answer so I thought I'd post it again here.

Does anyone know if the exhaust manifolds on a 1979 2.8 V6 (fox bodied) is the same as the exhaust manifold used in the 74-78 Mustang IIs with the 2.8?

I don't mean the manifold-to-engine bolt pattern but rather if the manifolds drops down from the engine the same so the collectors which hook onto the exhaust pipe are in the same position.

I believe 79 was the last year they put the 2.8 in the Mustang and I wouldn't think they changed the exhaust manifold that year but I was hoping someone would know for sure.

But then again, I know the Fox body was obviously different from the IIs and I'm trying to figure out if I'll have any clearance problems with the frame, etc.

Thank you
Gary

Sorry I can't actually answer your question for sure, but I don't THINK they are the same.
You might be interested to know that 1986 only Aerostars that had the 2.8 had headers on them from the factory. As it's rather hard to find headers for any 2.8 they might be a solution. The fit on an Aerostar is very tight, so I suspect they might be easily adapted to your car. I know the Ranger 2.8 guys use them.

GypsyR, thanks for replying. Regarding headers, you are actually getting ahead of me. Here is what I'm hoping to do.

I have Healey replica made from a 1979 Mustang with the 2.8. I want to put headers on it for a reasonable cost and effort. A few companies list headers for the 2.8 in the Mustang II, but nothing for the 1979 Mustang with the 2.8. I hoping to get headers which will hook up to my stock exhaust pipes so I don't need to replace the entire exhaust system or do much fabricating. I also have a 2.8 in Bronco II which I just got headers for. After looking at a few different types, I went with Edlebrock because even though they were a little more expensive than some of the others, they hook right up to my stock exhaust system which in the long run saves me time and money.

So anyhow, I figure that if the stock exhaust manifold on a 1979 with a 2.8 is the same as the stock exhaust manifold for the Mustang II with the 2.8, a set of headers for the Mustang II with a 2.8 should hook right up to my exhaust pipes on my Healey replica built from a 1979. Not having to change any of the rest of my exhaust system sure would be nice.

I hope that makes sense.
Any other info, thoughts, or suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks again
Gary

Thanks for the tip on the Aerostar Headers! Never thought to look there!

I could have sworn that the 79-up stangs used the standup sixes and not the V6.

Try these guys too for the MII V6 headers. I have yet to buy from them but if I remember the price they quoted me, it was a little more than half the cost of Hookers. The company is Patroit Exhaust, affliated with Pertronix.

I see Patriot makes headers for the 1974 thru 1976 Mustang II with a 2.8 V6 for $168 plus shipping. That's a pretty reasonable price. But I still don't know if they would be the same as for my 1979 with a 2.8 regarding how they hug the engine and drop down to the exhaust pipe.. So again, does anyone know if the orginal exhaust manifold from a 79 was the same as in the Mustang IIs?

Yes, the aerostar headers are cool. Only available on the 86, though.

The 2.8 was used in the 79 Fox-chassis only, then was discontinued until 83 when it was revived for the Ranger (and the Bronco II in 84). It was used until the end of the 85 model year, then showed up in the Aerostar for 86 (only).

The Aerostar also had the multi-V belts, and the one I have also has an aluminum driveshaft and a 7.5" diff with 4.10 Trak/Lok (which will be going into my Ranger)
