Cripes. Talk about hindsight.

This could get confusing now too. "Hey, I own a GT." "REALLY? How can you afford that $100K sports car?" "No, I mean a Mustang GT."

Or vice-versa.

Sounds like the T-5/Mustang no-deal back then, although on a bigger scale.
Anyway done right, Ford. It is just a piece of name and then .... I have a GT40 press kit, that might be worth hundreds of $ in 30 years??

Ford had the chance to buy the name for peanuts back in the '60 when it was owned by Lola.... which is what a MkI GT40 actually is... but they decided they didn't want the name..... Hindsight is always 20/20..

Technically speaking, the Ford LeMans racer was NEVER officially called the 'GT-40'. The real name of the car was the...Ford GT.
'GT-40' was a nickname hung on the car by the motoring press in reference to the fact that it was 40 inches high.
Considering that the new car is 44 inches tall, I think that should have been used in the name.
'GT-44' has a nice ring to it.
