I really cannot remember the senquence of numbers & letters but this is all that is visible on the R/H apron of one of our old projects. It was in sad shape when we got it way back when. The L/H apron had been replaced hence no data plate. None to be found on the doors. It was painted some old off the wall chicken poop yellow & had 4 different size tires. The original engine was long gone & a 4 speed had been put in. After my brother started scraping the yellow off we found dark green paint & gold striping. The side scoops, gas cap, steering wheel & under ride bars kinda gave it away. My question is how can I find a vin. number for him? The tag receipt only has SFM1040 on it.

There is more to a Shelby VIN. The Shelby tags were riveted over the Ford VIN on the left inner fender. The Shelbys were titled with the Shelby VIN, not Ford's. Your proper VIN Shelby should be SFM6S1040.
It would be a good idea to contact the Shelby club to see if #1040 exists somewhere else (your missing tag riveted on another car).

There are 2 hidden VIN numbers on the car. If any of the original sheetmetal is still intact you can verify the hidden Ford VIN's with SAAC and see if its an original car. The VIN's are located just about opposite the hood hinges on the inner fender panels. You will have to raise the fenders to get a look at this area. SAAC will confirm a Shelby VIN if you have the Ford VIN but not the other way around. Under no circumstances will they give you the Ford VIN. Good luck.
BTW The registry has very little info on your car. Original color was green. Hertz car. Shipped to Ball Ford in Miami in Feb 66. Shipped to TJ Ray in 67.

Sandy & DidgeyTrucker,
Thanks for the info; found the numbers under the fender as you said. Also as you said the other # stamped into the apron is SFM6S1040. Sorry to take so long to thank you but wanted to have the #'s to the rest of puzzle first. SAAC confirmed the #'s

Tracy,
My brother is working at going thru it to fix the problems of age, probably just enjoy it when he is done. Found the retired used car dealer that originally bought this one with several others from Hertz. My brother was looking to see if he could trace its owners. Only one gap between the guy he bought it from & the car dealer. Better go, ya'll take care.
