most of the system optimizing programs are a shoddy way of doing stuff a real tech can do, or a user can do while reading a guide.Stuff like defrag, deleting temp files, removing spyware, setting DMA access on drives, cleaning registry entries and deleting unused programs.
You generally only get marginal benefits from the optimizing software and often the gains (5% faster) are not worth the costs (10% overhead of running the software).
Norton Systemworks is one example. It scans drives for errors, defrags, etc, and takes up tons of RAM even while not in use. It loads with the system at all times, which slows startup time and lowers overall performance.
