I noticed my truck plates were set to expire at the end of the month but I don't recall getting a notice from the state. Usually Illinois is very good about reminding you. Anyway, like a good citizen, I went to the DMV to renew both my 66 GT and my 98 F150. I told the guy I hadn't received a notice on the truck but I'd like to renew anyway. He informs me my truck is overdue for EPA inspection and my driver's license is suspended as of Dec 21! I wonder when they were going to get around to telling me or were they just waiting for me to bring up the subject?Turns out my truck plates are still registered to my business address and the mail wasn't being forwarded anymore, so the notice for EPA inspection (and they send plenty of them) and the notice for renewal didn't make it to my home address. I would think since my dirver's license is my home address I should have received a notice at my house they were suspending my license. Took the truck to get tested today, it failed, it needs an EGR valve. Have the old one off and will pick up a new one at Ford tomorrow. Then I need to have Ford reset the OBD II computer and I can take it back for a retest. If it passes my license is automatically renewed. Scott

What part of China do you live in? Suspending your drivers license for not taking a vehicle for a smog check sounds quite draconian. What happens if you've taken the car off the road and just let the plates lapse?

Its my fault for not updating the mailing address on the truck plates. They send you a notice saying you have 90 days to test, and if you fill out a response card you get extra time, like 6 months. On the card you can put down that its in a shop, out of state, whatever, and they give you extra time. Even after the 90 days is up they keep sending notices, each one getting a little more serious. Eventually after no response from you they tag your drivers license. I just wish they would have sent the notice to the address on my license, not on the truck registration.

Scott, I can relate to your problems, my daughter is trying to get her Mountaineer licensed in California, still driving on Kentucky plates. Same problem, EGR valve, no inspection. Well, today she gets involved in an accident, and rear ends a new Porsche Carrera. I don't think ones gonna have a happy ending.Mike

Wow that sucks, but then again, you are dealing with government agencies. I've had two drivers license renewals lost in the mail over the years. I don't do any car renewals through the DMV anymore. I always use the Auto Club. Now the post office, that's another sore topic with me................------------------ reliving youth

Somehow, and I know we're talking government here, but somehow there should be an exemption if you have 2 licensed drivers for 6 licensed vehicles. Okay, so one doesn't pass emissions, but the OTHER 5 do! So shouldn't I be allowed to still drive one of those? NO, they suspend my license so I can't drive ANY of them!

Thanks Steve, I'll give that a try. My local Ford dealer is only 2 miles away and one of the wervice writers said he'd reset it no charge. I think he would have mentioned the 3-start thing when I asked him. Also talked to another friend who for 10 years has been a Ford service writer (its good to have back-ups!) and he said I wouldn't be able to reset it, come in and he'd also do it no charge. I'm headed out to get the part, should be fixed within the hour! Scott

ouch! hope you get that back super-soon!!!! kinda scary to know you were driving suspended eh? the NC guvmint will dish out a $250 fine if we let our emmission inspection lapse ...... however .... the DMV recently changed the laws so none of our classic rides need safety inspections henceforth and forever more! and .... next year our lightnings do not need to pass emmissions.... (although they always pass with flying colours)...... my boss who is a tree hugging whiner always has smarta$s comments to make about my old cars not needing emmissions testing and i am very quick to tell her my cars are in better shape than 90% of the newer crap on the roads..... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....go eat some granola for gods sake..... heh heh kk
disclaimer: 90% is an arbitrary number and there is no lab testing/data/conclusion to support this statement....it is simply my perception of the world....my perception and i am sticking to it!! heh heh

Hmmm, ok. That works on Pam's car and it mentions it in the manual. Maybe not all vehicles do that. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

Got the part, went back for the gasket, installed in 5 minutes, tried the restart 4 - 5 times and the light stayed on. Ford reset it, also told me about a problem they had with a similar truck a couple weeks ago. They said if it throws a code again they found carbon in a couple tiny ports in the intake near the throttle body. Then he said if I clean out the carbon and disconnect the battery for 15 - 20 minutes it should reset. Took it to get tested....I didn't fail, but I didn't pass either. The OBD computer "isn't ready" to be tested, I need to put some miles on it with a variety of conditions, stop&go, cold start, hot start, etc. Still in driver's license limbo, but I need to drive it to get the computer 'ready' to be tested.
