hello every one. i hope you all can help me with this problem i have. i have been trying to sell one of my cars and for about a year i have not had any takers, not even anyone with serious thoughts about it. i am in the military so my parents are looking after the car, and helping me try to sell it. a few days ago my parents got a call from somone either was deaf, could not speak, or couldnt speak english, because they had to use either an operator, or some program to translate to speak with them. my parents got this persons e-mail to comminucate eaiser. i put the car for sale at $3200 obo. we agreed on $3000. the lady(i guess is a woman e-mail address reads sarah_allen...) said they would send a certified cashiers "cheque" from a US bank and have their shipping agent pick up the car after the "cheque" is in our hands. from what i gather the car will be shipped to Toronto, Canada. naturally we said that would be great. the car wont be theirs until the check clears. next day she writes back that she will be sending a check for the amount of $6500.. 3k for the car, $3300 to pay the shipper(they have other pick-ups for her as well), and $200 for "the charges incured in the transaction." now , to me that seems a little too trusting, does it not? we have asked her that she pay the shipper in another manner, but my parents have yet to get a reply from them. i know this is pretty long, and i appoloigize. but, i need to know, does this seem like a scam to you? i am kind of worried, but i know i will not let them have the car until that check clears the other bank, if they do send one.. but anyways, what are your thoughts? i wouldnt think its normal to send the shipping money to the person you are buying from, when you dont even know them..? almost too good to be true you know. thanks, and sorry thats this is so long. im just worried.

You have every right to be worried, it sounds like a scam.I would tell her to send you the sum requested, no more, no less, and if she sends a check of ANY means, she will have to wait until the check clears (which at my CU could be 2 weeks or more), and she would have to pay the shipper herself. If you go through with this, be extremely careful that you don't end up with a bounced check and no car...

This is a well documented scam method. It's a bit complex, but I think we ran through it before here at M&M with some guy in the Netherlands (?). I have had a few of these offers myself. Sadly, you must tell them to take a hike, or report them to the FBI. Good luck selling your car!

This is a scam, do not go through with it. Part of the scam is to make you feel at ease but also feel sorry for the purchaser because he/she has an obvious handicap, this is also part of the way they use to gain your trust. Cashier's checks can be counterfeit just like real money. You could be out not only the car, but your bank could come after you for restitution on your deposit of a phoney check.

The 2 week hold the bank puts on a check is not failsafe, the bank can come back several weeks later and say that check was no good, then you will really be screwed. Beware and play it safe, CASH.
