Motorcyclist dies in crash

By Robert Boyer
Staff writer

Leonard Allen Jr. was traveling north shortly before 11:30 a.m. when his 2002 Kawasaki struck the passenger door of a 1999 GMC Jimmy driven by George Willard McKinney, said Fayetteville police Lt. Katherine Bryant.

Allen, who lived at 305 Tuscon Drive, died on impact, Bryant said. He was 27.

McKinney, who is 78 and lives at 525 Country Club Drive, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

He is in critical condition, police said.

Bryant said there were no passengers.

Witnesses told police that the Jimmy was turning left from a southbound lane of Bragg Boulevard onto McPherson Avenue when the wreck happened.

The force of the crash knocked the sport utility vehicle onto the driver's side and propelled Allen through the front passenger window.

The impact left a 2-foot-deep dent in the passenger door and tore off the motorcycle's front wheel.

At least one part of the sport utility vehicle was found 40 feet from the crash site.

Bryant said the speed of the motorcycle was a factor in the crash, but she did not estimate how fast it was traveling.

No skid marks were visible from the direction the motorcycle was traveling.

The wreck shut down the northbound lanes of Bragg Boulevard at McPherson Avenue for about 2 1/2 hours.

I can't tell you how many times one of these guys have come up beside me in traffic and challenged me!

I usually look at 'em like they're stupid and shake my head.

Hate this happened for the fella and I know his family is at a loss, but some of these guys are so careless!

The impact bent the frame of the SUV and tipped it over......that's how fast he was going!!!

Speed or no, sounds like the SUV didn't yield, making his left. Many years ago, saw a cyclist get killed when a young woman made a left at a traffic signal intersection. The cyclist, wearing full leather & helmet, was traveling along, when she cut in front of him. The impact catapaulted his body over the car onto the street. Impact knocked his shoes off. He was killed instantly. I spoke up as a witness telling the police what happened and who was at fault. Never forgot it!

That's why I like being inside of the machine instead of on top of it.

I agree with you, Steve!

Pete,

I don't know who was at fault and the article does cite that speed was a factor.

Also, there is a group of these guys who ride a route around the city on weekends trying to see who can get from point a to point b in the quickest time.

Sounds like racing to me.....

This is why I don't ride anymore. Lost my nerve after a couple of crashes.(too many broken bones and road rash)

Two types of riders...those who have fallen and those who are going to fall.

Most of the crotch rocket riders have the attitude that it can't happen to them....I WAS one of them.

I wrecked a motorcycle once, a 1978 Honda CB750K...at 20 mph in a city park!
Sunday afternoon when all the teenagers were cruising through the park taking up space, I just happened to be among them. I came around a blind curve with a big tree on the curve, started accellerating halfway through the curve and YIKES!!
Traffic was stopped dead in front of me after the curve!
I had no time to safely stop, so I locked the rear brake and started skidding. I tried to go right and ended up grazing the right taillight lense of a pickup truck with my left handlebar and left knee...UPSIDAISY I went. Flew through the air in a tumbling slow motion it seemed like, and landed in a fetal position next to a giant tree stump!
And guess where my helmet was, strapped to the seat...
I immediately stood up, and fell back down. My left leg was injured as well as my hand and other abrasions.

I gave up the riding for a while, but after fixing the minor damage to the bike, I lost interest because it was RICE anyway...

I've had my mind set on owning a Harley since then, but I still don't try hard enough to own one yet. Wonder if I'm scared?
Naaaah...I just don't have good enough facial hair yet...

I looked up these two roads on mapquest and Bragg Blvd is a major divided 4 lane highway into Fayetteville. Prime road for seeing what a crotchrocket will do. The Jimmy did cross his path but a 600 pound motorcycle hitting a 4500 pound SUV hard enough to create a 2 ft deep dent, bend the frame and turn it over, well..... I'd have to guess his speedometer wasn't pointed at the double digits.....
