As a graduation gift (just finished my Master's), my wife offered to buy me my choice of XBox or PS2. She tires of asking me what I want only to have my list consist of things that I'd buy myself anyway. She decided I was getting something completely impractical. She's right - I'd have never bought one of those myself, but I kinda like the idea....Anyway, I've been doing lots of reading, and I'm really on the fence between the two. I like the fact that XBox has digital audio outputs, ethernet (I have a cable modem - although I'm not sure how much I'd use it), is ready for HDTV, and has a hard drive. PS2 certainly has many more games it would seem, tho. Seems you need to buy lots of extras with PS2 (controller, memory card), but then you need a DVD mod for XBox to watch DVDs with it. I'm in complete conflict with myself. Anyone have opinions on this stuff?

I've heard an awful lot about the hard drives in the Xbox crashing.Besides, PS2 has Gran Turismo 3. And no, I'm not biased...I have a GameCube. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

Like the GameCube? I was just in Blockbuster looking at the rental selection. PS2 had 3 aisles, XBox 2 aisles, and Gamecube 1. XBox is coming out with Sega GT, which is supposed to be right in there with Gran Turismo.... I just don't know what to do man!!!

I guess I like the GameCube for what it is. It's just a gaming system...no extra DVD stuff or anything (not that we'd need it...we have 5 DVD players in the house already), but I do wish there were more games available for it. I've had it since it came out in November, and my brother and I only have 5 games for it total. Now, later this year, that'll change because they're supposed to release continuations of their legendary series (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, more Resident Evil games, etc), but right now, it's a lull. Or maybe it's just me not really expanding my gaming likes. And hey, GT3 has the Cobra R in it!! C'mon!! PS: If she's getting it right away, then it would definitely be the Xbox. Even though Sony did announce that they're dropping prices on the PS2, retailers have not done so, at least up here in Annapolis. Best Buy, Circuit City, etc...are all still selling the PS2 system only for $299.99. The Xbox is $199.99. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project [This message has been edited by IIGood (edited 05-29-2002).]

xbox? boo! lol, stick with teh PS2. it's 199.99 at the toysRus in waldorf. I have one.....and they do have a digital out. believe me...I know bc I have it hooked up to my surround sys. I'm really not a big fan of Xbox...most of the games for it are pretty shabby(except the sports games) and the controllers are a bear to handle. Honestly..I'd get the PS2. Am I biased? yes...a little. GT3 is an awesome game..in fact...it's why I got the PS2. Well that, and I'm waiting for the new colony wars/G-police games. Oh yeah....don't forget FF10(this game is the devil...I can't play it for less than an hour). As for the gamecube...I've played it. I like it. I'll probably get it once zelda, mario, and metriod come out for it. Anyway...it's 2am, I'm tired(probalby not making much sense) and I still say PS2~!!------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Well, what about online gaming? Can you do that with PS2? Doesn't have an ethernet adapter does it?I have seen PS2 (at blockbuster as a matter of fact) for $199. I almost walked out with it after seeing the vast amount of games for PS2 as compared to XBox. I just think the ethernet connection of XBox is a cool idea. I heard that PS2 only comes with 1 controller? What's up with that? [This message has been edited by GTRocks (edited 05-30-2002).]

All the systems only come with one controller, unless you get some special package deal. I guess the manufacturers started doing that with the previous generation of consoles...my N64 only came with 1 controller. I remember the original Nintendo had 2 controllers and a game. As for online gaming, I don't know if any of the companies have implemented their online stuff yet. Last I heard, they were all "in the works" still, but we should be able to see something by this fall. I know the GameCube will have a modem/ethernet adapter available by Q3 '02. Check out ign.com for more stuff related to gaming...they have a section for each system. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

The ps2 is going to support online gameing last I heard....same with the cube, and the box. Don't let the hard drive in the box sell you either. I've heard that the ps2 will have a hard drive ready for it with the next FF game? I can't remeber now. You should really read up at IGN like IIGood suggests...it can answer all of your questions alot better than we can.------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Just kind of another useless bit of trivia on these systems...here's how they rate in terms of speed:1. Xbox (733 mHz) 2. GameCube (450 mHz) 3. PS2 (200 mHz) 4. Dreamcast (150 mHz) Dreamcast isn't really in the picture anymore though, since Sega quit the hardware arena. ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

I got the PS2 for my son on his birthday(lol), it was recomended to me by my nephews who play a bit of these games. When we bought it I picked up a couple of games for him and a $9 Ford Racing game for myself. I have not yet reached the level where I can race the Mustangs or the GT40 yet. I will keep trying. Oh yeah, you can play PS1 games on the new PS2 That's what the Ford Racing game was and I guess why it was so cheap.------------------ joe 2001 SVT Cobra 68 GT Fastback 98 F-150 90 Escort GT (smokes the tires in all 5 gears, or just smokes through all gears)

Ok, so I took your advice and decided to get the PS2. I went to Wally World and went to electronics. Paced up and down the rows a bit and couldn't find the PS2 itself...games, but no box. So I ask this "kid" that came up with a Wal-Mart vest on. Pimples everywhere. Techno-geek would be putting it mildly. Anyway, I ask him, "Do you have the PS2 system in the back somewhere, I don't see it here". He says, "What kind of games are you into?". I said, "I'm going to start with GT3, then I'll probably get into some role playing games, etc.". He says, "Oh, you don't want the PS2 then, you want the XBox". At that point I was just fed up with the whole decision making process and bought the PS2 anyway. I got GT3 from K-Mart...Wally world was sold out, as was Target. Also picked up the new Star Wars game (haven't played that one yet). I played GT3 for about an hour. Took me a while to figure out how to actually start a race Beat my wife a couple of times in the NSX. Finally figured out how to open the garage on the memory card, then ran a couple of rally races in the Focus. That was cool, but I could not beat the computer. I could get a good lead, but always seemed to wipe out right before the finish line. Oh, well, the weekend is just beginning!! Thanks for your inputs guys! Dave

Well, congrats on your decision. Enjoy! I was over at my friend's a couple weekends ago, and we were up until 4 in the morning playing GT3...we were doing the Endurance races, so that was mainly why we were up so late. That kid at Wal-Mart...he oughta be fired for disgracing the company. (RPGs...is the Final Fantasy series on PS2?? I think so...) And like Joe said, you can even play PS1 games on the PS2. Gotta love backwards compatibility. So if you ever get tired of the lack of Fords in GT3, go out and pick up GT2 for the PS1 and play away. Have fun!! ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

Yeah Final Fantasy is PS2. TechnoGeek recommended that one too. I spent about 6 hours playing GT3 yesterday. It's just slightly addictive! I figured out how to open the garage and start my own racing. I started with the Miata since I couldn't afford any Fords. Won't be long now.....
