Howdy All,

Several weeks back, I asked several questions about tuning a Holley 830 HP carb on a 393 stroker. I finally got a chance to get the final tune done by Rob at Keith Craft Racing, here in Plano.

The advice given here (i.e. Alex)was pretty close to what I ended up with on the carb settings. Still, I had a bad bog when I floored it from 2500 rpm that I could not get rid of. That is fixed now. Here are the results.

445.5 rwhp at 6100 rpm
438.3 ft/lbs at 4900 rpm.

Most of the final tune was done by changing the air bleeds. The jets and squirters were nearly exactly what Alex has recommended.

The baseline dyno pull 428 rwhp, it was pretty close to start with. I just could not finish it out without some help. It it still making power at 6600 rpm, but dives off after that.

Next up is the roll cage. HPDE starts in February, and two new open-track courses are opening in my back yard.

Eagles Canyon ( http://www.eaglescanyon.com ) opens in January, and it is only 70 miles from my house. It is only 12 miles from where I grew up.

Racers Ranch ( http://www.racersranch.com ) is supposed to open early next year, and it is less than 50 miles from my house.

Also have Motorsport Ranch, in Cresson, which is 85 miles away.

I just need to get busy!!

Thanks,
Randy

Alex,

Rob lost me on the final run, which nailed the lean condition off throttle. He was changing jets and air bleeds at the same time. I have the data, and I will post it next week, from my fast computer at work.

Here are the details on the final carb tune. This is just FYI, and to capture the data for reference.

Primary jets: 80
Secondary jets: 86

Primary shooter: 35
Secondary shooter: 35

Primary Idle air bleed: 77
Secondary Idle air bleed: 77

Primary high-speed air bleed: 27
Secondary hight-speed air bleed: 24

Thanks,
Randy

I love mine now. There is lots of ways to skin a cat with it. Holley warns against tuning the air bleeds, but that looks like the way to skin-the-cat.

The down side is that 5 dyno runs used at least 5 gallons of gas. Don't know how that translates to MPG, but SPG (smiles per gallon) are pretty high.

Talked to Rob a couple of times. Think he's a great guy. Not many guys nowadays will stop what they're doing in the shop to come out and talk to you and give a tour of the place. Haven't been to the new location yet. He's a sharp guy though. Not unlike Alex:-)

Yep, Rob was quite friendly. In fact all the folks were. I went in the day before the dyno runs, just to talk to them. Rob gave me a tour of the shop, showed me all the cars, then just let me hang out. I spent about 30 minutes talking to one of their mechanics that was installing a Grigg's suspension on a Boss 302 clone.

I give them a thumbs up, and it is nice to have them only 4 miles from my house (I had to walk home when I left my car for the night, and I had to walk back to their shop to pick it up).

Here is a link to the graph of the final dyno run. It took four pulls to get it right.

Also, if you have the run files from your pulls on a Dynojet, you can download an eval copy of the software from Dynojet. Then you can view the charts on your computer.
