I have a 289 and am switching from stock cast heads to afr 165's
I have flat top pistons and trying to determine which head gasket to use. Is there a rule of thumb distance that you should not go below in terms of clearance between piston's and valves? Thanks for any input...

289, I think different people have differing views on your question. Some folks say .060 is OK, I keep my intakes no less than .080, & exhaust no less than .100, but thats me AND on a fat motor.

Remember to check it in the overlap position.

If i use say a .039 compressed gasket would i have enough clearance? I'd like to get back a little compression if possible w/o milling the heads.

Have you checked your actual piston to valve clearance yet? We can't tell you if a certain thickness gasket will be safe unless you can tell us what the clearance is? Your cam is basically what determines your clearance.
