I have a 289 and am switching from stock cast heads to afr 165's I have flat top pistons and trying to determine which head gasket to use. Is there a rule of thumb distance that you should not go below in terms of clearance between piston's and valves? Thanks for any input...

289, I think different people have differing views on your question. Some folks say .060 is OK, I keep my intakes no less than .080, & exhaust no less than .100, but thats me AND on a fat motor.Remember to check it in the overlap position. BC

If i use say a .039 compressed gasket would i have enough clearance? I'd like to get back a little compression if possible w/o milling the heads. ------------------ 289 A code 4v, 4spd, stock heads 3.55 open, best et 14.44 @97.29http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/ga289stocker/yard2.jpg

Have you checked your actual piston to valve clearance yet? We can't tell you if a certain thickness gasket will be safe unless you can tell us what the clearance is? Your cam is basically what determines your clearance. ------------------ 1982 Ford F100 2wd Shortbox. Powered by a 357 Cleveland w/ stuffed closed chamber 4v's and a Funnelweb.
