I have a 289 ci with a weiand hi tunnel ram intake with dual holley carbs # 9776 (450 cfm ea).I have to keep the rpm's up above 1200 to keep idle otherwise it will turn off. It idles fine when it warms up. I am about 2000 ft above sea level. How do i adjust to idle when cold?

Do the carbs have power valves? If so what size? It may be too lean when cold.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Manual or electric choke? Choke adjustment may be in order, same thing on my Holley 600. Electric choke adjusted forward & she runs perfect now when cold.

Not sure if this is the case, but i couldn't get my edlebrock to idle anything under 1200rpms and it turned out to have the idle circuit plugged up. One of the primary boosters was plugged and was killing the idle circuit. Once the debris was removed it idled like a champ.------------------ 1970 Grabber Blue Mach 1 H-code 1970 Fastback 2003 Torch Red Mustang

Cold motors like to run rich. That's why we have chokes. Your problem sounds normal.Tracy

Motor idles great when warmed up about 1200-1400 rpm. But when I shut it off and let it cool for a little it does not want to idle, it stumbles lower on the rpm's than it will shut off. I will try to ck the power valves.

There are not any choke plates. Model 9776 which I referenced to a 4160 model carb. Similiar to there carb 0-4224. see linkhttp://www.holley.com/0-4224.asp

Sounds pretty much normal to me too. If you've got a motor built to support that tunnel ran, driveability should not be a big concern.....

I don't use chokes on anything, i just put up with it. What i do is warm the engine up a bit then shut it off for a few minutes to let the heat soak in. Usually i'll do that by shutting it off at the first red light. It'll idle fine after that.
