I was trying to start my 351c tonight and it let out with a loud crack. I turned the engine over by hand it could hear it clunking back by the starter. I then pulled the starter out and found out the drive gear was pushed forward and blew the front of the cone off. Now, how do I get the starter nose cone out of the bottom of the bellhousing without pulling the trans? Any thoughts?

Tip the truck on it's side and shake it. Sorry. I couldn't resist.

How about a magnet?

No, a magnet won`t work, as the nose cone is aluminum. I suppose you could try putting something sticky on a stick (like duct tape, or even chewing gum), and poking around thru the starter hole. You may get lucky. Otherwise, short of drilling a fairly large hole in the bottom of the bellhousing, you may need to pull it apart. Any idea on WHY the starter broke? Good Luck.

Depending on how large a piece is in there, a mechanical finger might work. Most of the parts stores have them.An air gun might dislodge it to a point where you can grab it too.

So far I've tried: blowing air in under the ring gear to see if it would bounce around enough with my other hand in the starter hole as far as possible, I stiff wire with really sticky packaging tape on it probing around, and putting a bolt through a hole in the flexplate with a wire pinched around it with some rags tied to it and I spun it around a couple times and tried to get it to grab it, but nope.

As for why it did it, I'm not sure. With my MSD Digital 6 box and I have it set on full start retard, it will kick and stop the starter sometimes. My timing is locked out but with the start retard, it shouldn't kick back. I'm not sure if my MSD Digital 6 plus box is defective, just got it this last summer. But I'm guessing I'll be pulling the tranny back a few inches on Saturday and pulling that piece out.

Ha, yeah, if there was a SAFE way to lay it on its side, that would be the best. But, I really don't think thats an option. I think starters should be made out of STEEL so the pieces can be picked out with a magnet. HAHAHA

Sounds like the start retard isnt working properly, or mayeb not all the time. My timing is locked out and I run an MSD Starter Saver, and it never kicks back.

We never have starter issues anymore since we just started using good sh*t.
Sometime in the early 90's went to brand new gear reduction stuff only and never looked back.
With locked timing, high or low compression.

This starter was a brand new gear reduction unit. It lasted about 2 years. I didn't put a crappy starter back in it after the remaned one went out. I'm looking at getting a CVR starter for it this time around.

I'm gonna give MSD Tech a call and ask them about the box. Unless its a starter issue that was causing my engine to kick, but I'm thinking the starter broke cuz the engine kicked back.

GOT IT OUT!!!! Ended up putting a couple rags on a wire and bolting it to my flexplate again. Spun the engine by hand and it came up with the rags.

Now I just have to wait until Monday when my CVR #5055 protorque starter arrives. Thanks for all the help and advice guys.

Next time just take a cutting torch and cut away the flexplate.
