I swear I saw a 9-3/8" carrier in a 9" housing the other day. Can that be right? It was in a '67-'72 F-100. The carrier had the curved rib on the top.Tracy

Never seen it done before but....I heard you just have to notch the housing alittle on the top and bottom to get the carrier to slide in..I cannot verify this tho...Cory ------------------ 68 Fastback 427MR 4 spd.Deluxe interior,8000 tach,140 speedo,am/fm,tilt.

Yup! I've done it before. Notch the housing a bit on top and bottom and the chunk will go right in. ------------------ Ben Grabber Green '70 Mach I 351C 4V Robbin Egg Blue '79 Fairmont 408C 4V, 10.50 127 MPH Prowler Purple '87 T'bird Turbo Coupe

I wonder why it was done? They needed a gear and the 9-3/8 was handy? Any benefits?Tracy

I donb't know why Ford produced the 9 3/8 rear. It is probably a bit stronger just because it is bulky. The only reason I put one in a 9" housing was because I got it for next to nothing and I need a gear for my truck. It was a no brainer. ------------------ Ben Grabber Green '70 Mach I 351C 4V Robbin Egg Blue '79 Fairmont 408C 4V, 10.50 127 MPH Prowler Purple '87 T'bird Turbo Coupe

I don`t know what Fords rationale was for making the 9 3/8s rear end, but it is not as strong as a 9". The diff case has a huge hole in the front for the pinion bearing retainer, possibly for the large diameter pinion gears that tall "freeway" ratio`s have. This large hole make the case weaker, in my opinion. Every 9 3/8" diff that I have seen has been a 31 spline with 2.80 or 3.00 gears, usually with a clutch style limited slip. I remember years ago, seeing a magazine article showing a 9 3/8" rear in a 10 second car. First attempt with the 9 3/8" ended up with the pinion gear sitting on the starting line!! ------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed [email protected] 1.32 60 foot 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. That 9 3/8" may be stock... i've got a 3.50 TractionLok 9 3/8 third member that came in a 67-72 pickup housing. Apparently over a certain GVW a half ton used 31 splines and a 9 3/8.
