Waiting for some more detailed explanation from NHRA tech. I have a letter into them. 18 degree valves? 2.02 intakes? 61 cc's? The loss of compression will kill us and with a 400 CFM carb those 167 cc intake ports are almost overkill.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." If you angle mill your heads .150 you have an 18 degree head so that's not a problem. The compression loss will be, as you say, a killer. I don't know what to think about the valve sizes. Now you can put the Comet 600 CFM carb on and run as a GT car. John

Oh really John???? Tell that to the valve reliefs in my Venolia pistons and see what they might have to say about it. heh heh heh You gotta think this stuff all the way through John. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." The 167cc is a maximum volume isn't it, so you'd be allowed to run much smaller ports? Can't imagine they'd allow a 2.02 valve as a replacement for a 1.78... the 10hp hit wouldn't be so bad. Might make a GT350 a decent combo with it's big Holley carb.

Heres the head they allow... http://www.canfieldheads.com/sbf_standard_intake.htm61cc chambers, 2.02/1.60 valves, 18 degree Might as well allow these at the bottom... http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/heads/ford_sb_victor.shtml There is actually more new SBF radical heads coming out, at SEMA i picked up the flyer for the Edelbrock 2006 new products. The coolest is the Victor II Pro Port head, it's raised port, inline valve 11 1/4 degree and uses a Yates head intake.

All you have to do is spread you lobe centers and there will be no clearance issues. Of course the cam might become a dog. There are getting to be so many redesigned SBF Ford heads it is getting confusing as to what head is legal in which class.
If Edelbrock design a new head it is legal in the Altered classes, if they get Ford to put a number on it the same head is now legal in Super Modified and some of the modified Super Stock classes. I need a handy wall chart of which heads are legal in which classes. With any good luck at all I will be running again next year. All I have had lately is bad luck so maybe the new year will bring a change. John [This message has been edited by JCQuinn@work (edited 12-01-2005).]

I forgot to add that after the angle mill, reshaping the combustion chamber, and relocating the valve seats you could now have the rare 64 fastburn heads. It seems these days you, the cast iron welding shop, and your favorite head grinder can come up with about any level of modification and still have legal heads. I have even seen a head service web page that can supply the casting numbers you want on your heads. John

John, at this point I think that I will just upgrade my "legal" combustion chambers to the 2004 chebbie specs and see what we have. I have been running my stuff with 2003 unmodified combustion chamber specs. There were so many illegal SBC's found at Indy 2003 that rather than inforce the rules, the just changed them to accomodate the cheaters. Now of course all of the chebbie guys are crying because of the Canfield Ford head. I have no clue as to who asked for this head as a replacment. I have spoken to almost every 289 SS racer in the country and nobody would have picked that particular unit. Most (as I) would have opted for one of the FRPP heads. Hell, all of NHRA tech is at the PRI show and most probably are not even aware of what was allowed here. I'm am certain that there will be some sort of revision on this head before all is said and done. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." I sure hope so, it seems like a poor choice.
