im thinking about using copper head gaskets to lower my compression, i looked at 3 different brands and all say that the block or heads needs to be o-ringed, is this true

Yes. With copper head gaskets you need to o-ring the block and have receiver grooves in the heads. A better solution is to order custom thickness gaskets from Cometic. Expensive, but cheaper and easier in the long run.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." As thick as you want. They are MLS and they build htem to spec. I beleive they have a part number for .100 that is ready to ship.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." They don't give those things away but they are of the highest quality. I run them on my motor (on Alex's recommendation, thanks again for the tip ) and with 7/16" bolts (not studded) and 7k shifts have never had a head gasket problem. ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" 12.58/110 on street tires, more to come;) All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

i went to the site, i can get a custom gasket up to 0.120 thick, that would bring my compression way down, to about 9 or lower, which is great, now is that a good way to lower the compression

Considering the options thats what I would do.

The only problem with this approach is you could lose your quench area. I don't remember the exact numbers you are looking for but if your make the clearence of the quench area too big you actually hurt your octane tolerence. In other words, you may have more detonation problems at 9:1 and a large quench area than at 10:1 and tight quench. HTH, B-loose
