Big goings on at Grippo Racing! I finally got my Stroker Windsor back after breaking a valve and tearing it up pretty good back in May. I haven't raced sinced then and I can't wait to get back out. Had to replace a head, a rod, all 8 pistons and of course 16 new valves. $$$$! Also freshened up the C4 while it was out. But they are back in the Mustang and it's almost ready to go.

And Dad's Cobra Jet is fresh off the dyno and ready to swap into his Fairlane. It made 530hp @ 6400rpm and 495lbs. of torque @ 4200. Should be a fun ride for him with the 4 speed on the street. Here are a few shots -

Joe,
BOTH ENGINES LOOK GREAT!

- AND I've got a lot of respect for your amount of automotive expertise and good judgement; But - I gotta ask - did you lift your dad's big & heavy FE using that carb plate affair? Those babies give me the WILLIES!

OK, so the wgt of the engine is ~550+lbs & is shared between the four carb studs; so about 135-lbs at each corner. The studs/bolts are typically 5/16" steel. No problem...and if you were using a OEM intake (cast-iron) I'd say you're fine. BUT - what do ya figure those punky ALUMINUM (intake) threads are rated for? Edelbrock says not to torque anything into their aluminum (intake) threaded holes over 25ft-lbs. That makes me think that even the BRAND NEW intake threads may pull without too much effort....

I know this subject has come up on M&M before, but I don't recall a consensus being determined from it.

Just my 2 cents worth,,,,,,, GOOD LUCK!

Ryan

Ryan: I can tell you I've pulled Calvert's motor with an Aluminum Intake the same way several times, It's never been a problem and we've never seen any stress to the intake threads.

Thanks to everyone for kind words...
Ryan, believe me I know what your saying, it is always in the back of my mind...all that weight hangin' on that intake. We have never had a problem and I have never actually heard of one letting go. That's not to say it can't happen though. Maybe we are on borrowed time.

However - assuming they'd use the bolt holes on either end of the heads, they would typically be 3/8" if not 7/16"; jand would be pulled at a 90* angle. Thus would be much stronger than a punky 5/16" thread hole being pulled vertically.

Mark,
Thanks for the real-time experience testimonial - real-time is always better than theoretical!

Maybe I'm just a scaredy-cat!!
