Got my set of headers today from the wonderful DutchD58 that posts on here ocasionally. He sent them free of charge which is one heck of a deal, and after a little bit of trouble at the border i now have them Anyway, on to my question, i'll have 3" pipes coming off the short tube headers, and was planning on installing a balance pipe, and since i'd be fabbing it myself figured that an H pipe would be easiest to fabricate. So my question is, with 3" pipe would i want a 3" cross tube or would 2 1/2" or so be big enough to even the pulses. Also will just Grade 8 hardware work for header bolts or do i need to get something special?

I honstly think it is a waist to run all three inch. the more flow is needed closer to the motor b/c the gases are so hot that they take up more room. they move to the bottom of the car and exit. I ve read it was ok to run the same size from the header or DP to the muffler but a smaller size will be perfectly fine after the muffler. It is also better to have the H or X pipe closer to the headers as possible. this i dont know why as It is what I read. probably b/c it allows the exhuast flow to even out closer creating less drag for the motor.so I say use 3 inch to the mufflers then run 2.5 inch duals. and use a 3 inch H pipe.------------------ 88 thunderbird TC 2.3L 66 mustang 200ci 3 speed 68 Fairlane 289 w/ auto 79 f150 300 3 onda tree

Thanks for the repliesThe plan is for 3" from the headers to the h pipe, and then after the h pipe using the flowmaster reducers to 2 1/2" through the mufflers.

351W, 3" pipes will i imagine be too big for the motor at the moment, but i have free 3" pipe, and the stock was 2 1/4" until the Y and then it was 2 1/2" single.I figure being on the big side will be as ok as being on the too small side now [This message has been edited by Dubz (edited 08-20-2005).]

Dubz,You'll need header bolts, 3/8-16 with 3/8 or 7/16 hex heads to clear the tubes. SteveW

I belive all cars are like that. they dont come from the factory with a gasket, but since you broke the seal it might be a good idea to put gaskets on. when I redid the head on my turbo coupe there was no gasket. I didnt put one on either just cleaned up the surfaces .------------------ 88 thunderbird TC 2.3L 66 mustang 200ci 3 speed 68 Fairlane 289 w/ auto 79 f150 300 3 onda tree
