Well I went by my machinist's shop today ( tupelo MS ) to line up some work and I am glad I did. On the dyno was an all aluminum Shelby block, edelbrock head 428 scj pumping out 650 ponies with a mild tune up. I got the owners name but I left it at home. ( I'm at work ) anyway he plans to run it in a 60 something fairlane in nostalgia super stock I think he said. Dang that was suhweeeet! even if it wasn't a 385 series.

FEs cost a lot to build now.
Especially 427/428 blocks.
That is why you don't see many any more.
460s or stroker windsors are cheaper to build.

Although the 427 stuff can be quite costly to aquire, a decent 428 can be built fairly cheaply. The 428 in my Fairmont is a non CJ version from a Tbird (commonly available for $400.-600.), crank also non CJ ($250-350.)&stock 390-428 non CJ 3/8" bolt rods ($20.-50. set). I run the 428 CJ cyl. heads (stock valves, minor gasket matching port job), these normally run $450-600 a pair, although many guys buy new Edelbrock heads for a bit more than rebulding the CJ heads. For new performance stuff, other than an intake manifold, most stuff is priced similar to most other engines. Although I have a set of full roller Erson shaft rockers now ($600.)I ran virtually the same ET`s with OE Ford cast iron adjustable rockers. The rest of my engine includes Speed Pro forged pistons, a solid lifter cam, a Edelbrock Victor intake, although the factory Ford 427 "Sidewinder" dual plane has produced the best numbers to date, a Holley 780 Vac. Sec. carb, Ford Duraspark dist with MSD 6T box, 2" headers, and thats about it. In my 3100 lb Fairmont, it has gone a best of 10.20 @131.5 MPH, shifting at 6000-6200 RPM, and has made several hundred 1/4 mile passes. I built this 428 in 1994, freshened it in 1999, and when I pulled it apart last winter, everything inside still looked great. I do need to machine another block now, as the #2&4 main webs are cracked, but it has been extremley reliable, no blown head gaskets, spun bearingsetc. Since I was lucky enough to have bought a decent "stockpile" of 428 cores back when they were cheap ($125. for a pair of CJ heads, $100. blocks, & cranks etc), I honestly have approx $3000 in this 428, including machine work. I won`t be switching from FE`s anytime soon!(Unless some restorer/hoarder wants to buy all my FE stuff at Barrett-Jackson prices!!)
