Ok, i have a el-cheapo electric oil pressure gauge, and have been noticing now that i'm driving the car that on cold start up sometimes i have about 40psi of pressure, which when warm drops to about 20 or below. Wondering if i should run a heavier oil for when the car is hot, or a lower temp thermostat to keep the oil a little cooler which might keep the pressure up some more.

Anyone know when the stock oil pressure light comes on? It has never done so while driving, and i just got a new pressure switch, bulb comes on when ignition is on so i know that the bulb is still good. Wondering if the gauge is too crappy or what?

I just went thru this. how hot is it outside? and what weight oil are you running now? I switched to 10W30 and my oil pressure dropped quite a bit. I drained and installed 20W50 and it is perfect now. and this is with a semi synthetic or blended oil. summer months Im gonna go with 20W50 and winter Im gonna run the 10W30.

Running 10W30 in the car, temp is about 70-75 degrees outside at the moment, car has a 195 degree thermostat, car runs good for heat according to the temp gauge, right in the middle.

The oil gauge reads 35-40 on cold start, and got down to what looked like about 5-10lbs tonight while driving

Not sure the accuracy of the gauge, but even if it's close it's quite low

Do you think you might have air bubbles in the line to the guage??? Don't know if it would make a difference or not.

Air bubbles in the line wont make a difference.

The oil pressure light comes on with as little as 7 psi.

A heavier oil will pick up the pressure, but not necessarily the lubrication.

Is this a tired/stock bottom end? If so, it's OK. Run thicker oil.

I might add if you are running a fram oil filter switch to NAPA gold or wix,by the way napa gold is wix. If its a fram it could be causing a restriction itself.

My old motor did that too. I ran 20-50w oil and a can of restore. Helped the motor make it another 3 years.

as far as i am aware there is 62000 miles on it, so i wouldn't think it would be too bad.

If more pressure caused by a heavier oil won't help so much as lubricating better i don't think it would really be worth to switch would it?

And the filter says Mopar on it, so that's probably the problem Oil was changed out about 10 miles ago when I had the car into the shop to pull the oil pan.
