The type of ring that was used is called a head-land type, noticed the L shape towards the top with a pressure back spring.Super Stock guys use these alot. These rings are usually found in the back under racing applications. Try seal-power first. You will need too know the ring thickness which I think is .043. Bore size will be 4.035 file fit. These are for the piston's in Sam/Spencer's 289 that had the full floating pins. Thanks! SteveW

Steve; Are you talking about a Dykes style ring?

Head land is a type of ring developed by Speed Pro. The pistons are specifically cut for these rings. I used to run them. I think I either have some or can get you guys some. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." Mark, The top ring is L shaped with the wider (.125" outside surface the l of the L pointing up). The base of the L is abt. .140" and fits into the groove in the piston. The base is .061 thick and the l which points up to the head is .046-.047 thick. Hope that helps! Since it's all balanced and a pretty good short block, we are stuck w/o the right rings. We ran into the previous owner of this engine at the race and he is the one that is describing the piston rings in my post on M&M. He got it from a SS racer back in the day. Hope this helps! and thanks again, Steve

Tony,I didn't catch the SS's name, but maybe Sam or Spencer did? MarkT says they are C&A RL 017 G2000 .017 Dykes rings. They are on Brooks Racing pistons, we'll check that out and get this short block back on track. Alex, if you have the rings let us know. We'd rather buy them from MMkr Racing. Thanks everyone, SteveW

FYI a Dykes ring requires a perfectly round bore. I'm sure you use torque plates for the boring and honing but also be sure the bolt is putting a load on the same spot. Often the bolts used on the plate stress a little above or below the place where the end of the bolts used on the car are located.
