I have a 69 Mach One with the FMX trans in it. I am gonna replace the stock motor with a stroker and would like to know how much horsepower and torque the FMX can handle. Thanks Neil.------------------ 69 Mach One Restomod

A stock FMX tranny is rated high enough to handle a stock 351C engine if this gives you any help.

That is some help, but I am looking at putting probably the 408 or 426 stroker in. I wonder if the C4 or C6 would give me a better run at it?

I know nothing except what I hear. I'm confident the experts will tell you to go with a C6 or a late-model (26-spline input shaft C4). The FMX is supposed to be strong, I believe, but no one ever seems to get that far in the debate since they have already been assigned to boat anchor status. Main complaints are not to do with strength but with weight, and residual power loss (or whatever it's called). Here in the Philippines they also have a reputation for shaking loose their internal fittings on the bumpy roads. Unlike the C4 and C6, a lot of the internal plumbing is not bolt-on but "stick it in and hope".[This message has been edited by Fastback68 (edited 07-12-2005).]

i had a fmx in my 69mach1 but i went with a JPT full manual c-4 with a 10'' converter glad i did, i picked up the c-4 off the floor with no problem but that fmx almost broke my back it weights a ton, you will save a lot of weight by doing this swap and more parts are avail to the c-4.

I had a rebuilt FMX behind my moderately built 351C (it runs high 12s). The tranny lasted a month. If you are upgrading your motor, upgrade the rest of your drivetrain to match...

My 73 351C 2V convertible came from the factory with an FMX. It seemed to hold up pretty well in the 20 or so years that my dad drove the car. In 300,000 miles I think he had it replaced twice. While it's probably a decent trans, my gawd the thing is heavy! The best I can guess is that FMX stands for "Friggin Massive to the eXtreme".I'll put the FMX back in since I'm doing an original restoration job.
