My car will "jolt" into gear when I put it in reverse so I thought maybe my u joints were worn, I wiggled on the driveshaft & it seems quite firm, I took the driveshaft off anyway & had a look at the u joints, they are fine. I am wondering why there is a very brief pause when I put it into reverse & when it hits it HITS with a clunk, same deal when I put it into forward gears, not nearly as harsh though, still feels a little sloppy. the rear is a 9" limited slip with 3.00 gears.

Arrrgh. K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid. Not trying to flame. Been here done what you have done. You have answered your own problem I feel. YOU have eliminated the rear end, YOU have eliminated driveshaft slop. YOU have a transmission not working properly.

I tracked down the same problem on my '66 F-100. It has a '71 351C with an FMX. My "clunk" happens because the ears for the transmission mount are broken off the transmission! The transmission is just resting on the crossmember. The ears are still bolted to the mount. Now I need to find another tailshaft housing!

My gut told me it was the tranny too, but I got a buddy to lay underneath the car (trusting friend huh) & listen & watch while held the brake & went from Drive to reverse several times & he swore there was no noise by the trans, but distinctly @ the rear, when I would shift the gears the driveshaft would turn about an inch & jolt into place, but like I say when I wiggle on it, it doesnt move, if this helps any.
