OK my crank and rotating assembly is finally going together.

I have put the crank in and torqued the caps although I still need to remove the rear cap to put a 2 piece seal in.

I need to put the rods/pistons in.
I have checked endplay and bearing clearance and everything is good.

So once I have myself a block with pistons, crank, rods etc... Whats the next step?

Should I decide which cam to buy and get it? then get the timing chain kit?

I still have not decided on the cam. I would love a roller cam - which according to most folks will make a little more power and retain a little nicer idle. But the cost seems extreme. So now im thinking to get this going a little sooner I might go for a cheaper 270S comp cam. If I want a roller later then I could do that later on but im getting itchy to build the motor and dont want to wait extra months just to afford another 10hp from a roller cam.

BTW its a 72 block (non roller)

What do you guys think? I have an oil pump, thinking of a Canton 7 quart T pan and pickup as well, but surely the oil pump and pan would come later? I guess there is no specific order that I need to do this.

BTW I bought the Tom Monroe book (rebuilding small block fords) and its a great reference for the details.

Don't go too much further until you get that cam! You'll want to check piston to valve clearance now in case you have to take those pistons out for more notching!

Been there, DOING that!

well you probably have a decent piston since its a stroker, are the heads big enough to handle the extra cubes???? I would suggest a custom solid flat cam. they cost under 300 but will give way more power than a magnum shelf cam.

I dont even have the heads yet but Im planning on AFR185s or similar.

Which brings me to another point. Should I even start building given that it will be so long before I get the parts together? I am using assembly grease which should protect things but I dont want the fact that its sitting (covered up by a garbage bag) to cause problems.

I put a piston on a rod last night, those darn spirolocks were a pain. Wow. Why dont they use regular spring clips?

I hear good things about the 270S cam. I have a 282S in a 331 and I love it. Assuming you have stroker pistons with the deep valve reliefs, you'll have plenty of clearance with a 270S and even a 282S. Even Comp says in their instructions that checking valve to piston clearance is not necessary until you go to a 294S.

I used a Cloyes timing chain...a good product.

Yeah Mike I was thinking of asking them about their cam specs since they said it was a SFT, but it seems a little rude or presumptious to ask a man his cam specs...

Is that right or am I being too reserved?
Perhaps Ill shoot him an email.
Perhaps he might read this post and shoot me an email?

good heads and probably a decent solid flat cam. what ever cam works for his combo might not work for you if you have differnt heads. His car doesnt sound like daily driver cruiser but more like a streetable race car.
