in lu of my rescent blown head gasket, i set it to tdc before i pulled the head, but i moved the crank to see all the cylinder walls. is it possible or can i get it close? it is when number one is at the top of the cylinder right when it goes no further. or should i just wait till i put the head back on and do the finger blow trick?the head is a non interferiance so i dont have to worry about hitting a valve. thanks

No heads on the engine right?
put number one piston all the way to the top with both lifters for number one down.
Absolute top dead center.

nevermind, 2.3 right? uh... I'll pass this one off.

if its a over head cam anything then tdc is where number one piston is all the way up. you may need to the balancer and pointer to get exact.

if the #1 piston is all the way up and both lifters are down and the marker is not on "0" you have one of 2 problems. either the timing chain/belt has jumped a notch or the balancer has slipped within its self.

Also don't forget the piston sits at top dead center for a bit while the crankshaft stroke goes over the top and starts back down.Thats why its good to have a balancer and timer on the engine to get it dead on.If you suspect the balancer is off you can make a piston stop out of a piece of metal bolted across the cylinder with the head off and a bolt in the middle to contact the piston.Rotate the engine until it contacts the stop and make a mark on the balancer.Rotate the engine the other way until it contacts the piston and make a mark on the balancer.True TDC should be half way between these two marks on the balancer which is hopefully TDC on the balancer.
