I am about to install a pair of slide-a-links on my 65 Mustang. It has an 8 inch rear, with the axle housing tubes that are "necked down" at the area where the ubolts bolt the spring pad on. I just noticed that the new u-bolts that clamp to the new spring pad are much wider that the axle tubes. Is this a problem? Is it supposed to be like that? It doesn't look right to me.

They are designed to be used with the larger rear end housing.
They will not fit correctly on your housing.

Alex,
Any suggestions on what to do or what to use as a traction device? Does CE sell a different version?

Narrow the supplied U bolts in a vice and re-drill the plates to fit.
Then tighten down and they will conform the rest of the way.

Alex,
Would I be better off with a set of slapper bars, assuming I could get ones to fit the narrower axle? Does anyone make a set that will fit? Or can I use my old ubolts and relocate/elongate the holes in the new spring pad?

I do plan on seeing a fair amount of strip.

Thanks

You can make the Slide-a-Links work with a little massaging as I mentioned.

Alex,
Thanks...I am in the process right now. If I can just get enough time to finish it, I might make it to the track for the first time with the new 331 this weekend....Should I set the slide-a-links up as suggested in the manual? Any other tips?

Set them loose if you are driving to the track.
When you get there then screw about 1.5 turns from contact into the right side and 1/5 a turn in the left for starters.
Good luck at the track.

Hi, I fitted a set of Slide-A-Links on my 66 Mustang, it has the 8" necked axle, I opened up the slots on the spring plates, and got another set of 1/2" U-bolts and they fitted fine. They work real good, far better then the slapper bars I was running.
