found in bottom of oil pan. I was changing the oil and got a little piece of magnetic metal and decided to pull the oil pan, since I can without pulling the motor and found some little THIN pieces of metal. The bottom of the motor inside looks perfect. Pistons and cylinder walls look great, as do the rods.
I pulled a valve cover and everything looks fine. All keepers are there and the valves open and shut when I bar the engine.

The motor was running and running good, good oil pressure and everything. I was tuning on it earlier. Sheesh what is this crap? Pieces of cam? It's steel and very thin, like it was stamped or something. Sorry my digital camera sucks.

It's difficult to tell from the pics. How big are those pieces of metal - dime, nickel, quarter??

I think it's spring shim material after closer inspection.

Ok it isn't valve spring shims, I am now starting to think it WAs the oil slinger. There isn't one where one is supposed to be.

I think it is hit or miss. I've been running a slinger in my 557 on it's 3rd season. No problems with it. Not a mark on it when I freshened the engine in Jan. Using a Ford Racing double roller chain.

I did notice that my oil slinger is not flat though. It has a slight curve away from the crank sprocket. Just enough to clear the chain. Also ran one like this for 6 yrs on a 383W sbf.

What would it hurt to leave it out?

now to decide:
1. re bearing and new oil pump and salvage the season or,

2. spend money to finish the 557 on the engine stand for next year.

Have you looked at the bearings, oil pump and screen yet? I guess I can see it being the oil slinger, but on the other hand it really looks like bearing material that was hammered. Unless the camera shots ARE that bad. Have you tried to piece it together and verify it looks like it could have been the slinger? I just had a slinger in my hand to look at it and it got my curiosity goin.

All the bearings are accounted for and look good.

See the specs in the rag on the left? That came out of the Oil gallery. Filter is full of it too, they are all steel. Magnet picks it up. Pulled the caps on all bearings and they seem fine, haven't miced the crank yet though.
