It's a '73 Mav in very stock condition. 302 2 barrel, iron manifolds, 8.5-1 compression ratio and 1 1/4" single exhaust. It ran 17.30 at 77 mph. I thought it would be in the 19's. She went three rounds with it too before redlighting. LOLSteveW

Scott,Glen was first round runner up, Spencer got last round runner up in HS, and I lost in the second round with a .017 light. The Dart blew the tires off the starting line. We had a great time though!! Looking forward to July 4th. SteveW

It is still stock so we could get a baseline on it, and we just got it. Plus my wife wants to get used to it as it gets faster. We'll do different mods and post the ET's along the way for aspiring drag racers. We have an iron 4 barrel intake and a couple 600 Carbs to try next. Then some dual exhaust, better heads and a little Summit cam. More to come as time allows. Scott, We'll bring salad and deserts. We're looking forward to it and so is Melissa. BTW,This is the point in the build that bolt ons will not add much performance. As I found during Melissa's Mustang's march to the 10's. Dual exhaust and a 4 barrel might get it to the lower 17's and gears might take it back to the 17.30s. LOL Right now it's working off low end torque with high gears that take advantage of it. The open exhaust and lower gears will defeat that advantage. But, I'll share the adventure, if anyone is interested. SteveW

Steve, I'll be reading it I've always liked real world testing. Funny how you grow up thinking how some add parts make your car faster. Then read in testing like yours other wise. After spending the money and time on the new motor. I now have much better understanding and respect for POWER and low ET's. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. It has a Edelbrock performer intake ,Holley 600,Hooker 6901 headers. 3.55 and 27 inch tires. It ran a best of 14.68 @ 92 mph. Just hucking a 4v on it may not do much. On my brothers 66 289-2v 3 speed Mustang convertible just changing the 2.80 third member to 3.40's (from a MustangII) a bit of exhaust side porting and a mild cam made a huge difference, with the stock exhaust manifolds and 2v to keep it original appearing.

I did it backwards from what is recommended and what I recommend now.4bbls on a stock engine actually made one hell of a torque difference, but it probably was no faster in the quarter. Duals, then headers, now there is a noticeable difference, but of course I've lost that low end torque.

Well,The Maverick now has a cast iron C5OE intake and a Holley 600 cfm Vac Sec Carb. (thanks Glen and Sam) Everything else is pure stock! We'll run it on the 4th of July and let you guys know what a 2 to 4 barrel swap is worth on a stock 8.5-1 single exhaust 141 rated h.p. 302 is worth in e.t. This engine has never been opened up before, it still had the original intake gaskets. It has lots of sludge in the lifter valley. I flushed lots of rust out of the engine too. There are rust stains in the street's gutter all the way down the block. It has to be loving the attention. SteveW

I think factory pipe is 2 1/4... I'm pretty sure the factory pipe from the manifolds to the duals run were 2 1/4. Its pretty much the same exhaust as is under most 302 cars.

OK, maybe it has 2 1/4" tailpipes, I was just trying to point out that they were TINY. Our race cars have 3 and 3 1/2 inch dual exhaust with 1 3/4" and 2" primary tubes from each cylinder on the headers. Sorry the free pic is gone, not sure how to repost it. SteveW

The addition of a VS 600 Holley and a cast iron intake ran a best of 17.165 at 78.91 mph. A slight improvement but not much, as we predicted. A little cam is next on the agenda, but compression and exhaust will help the most. SteveW

My 78 Fairmont started out very similar to this. I got the car for free, with a very sick, stock 302 2v in it. I rebuilt the engine all stock at first (it was just a go to work driver)stock cam, 2 barrel intake & carb, the original C4 & 2.47 (eek)! 7.5" diff. With the 185 75R14`s, it ran a best of 16.5at 84 mph. The first step was a set of used $20.00 1 1/2" primary full length Hedman headers, hooked up to a junkyard OE 88 5.0 Mustang LX muffler & tailpipe combo. (had to extend the exhaust tips by 12" to reach the Fairmonts bumper). Straight 2 1/2" pipe from the headers to the mufflers (no cats). Went back to the track, but it rained, so I went with the next step, which was a 8.8" rear from a 5.0 Mustang with 3.55`s swapped in, along with new Traction Lok clutches. The following weekend, the weather was good, the car improved a biunch, to a best of 15.50 @ 88 mph, still with the stock 2 barrel, cam, and 69cc D8 heads (8.4 comp.)The next step was a 83-85 Mustang OE alum. 4 barrel intake & a 600 Holley vac. carb. Back to the track was quite a dissapointment, as the Et only picked up 1/2 tenth and .8 mph. I then added a Blue Racer cam & lifter kit (204, [email protected], 448,472" lift), the car actually ran slower!! ET`s, although it did pick up 1/2 mph. The 60 foots took a big dump, from 2.07, down to 2.18. I tried a buddys 600 double pumper, which helped a lot, hitting 14.8 @ 92 mph. I picked up a B&M "Holeshot" torque convertor, which got the 60 foots into the mid 1.9`s, and dropped the Et`s down to 14.4`s. Also, with the new convertor, when I put my 600 vac. back on, it was as quick as the DP. The next step was a pair of junkyard 1969 351W heads ($40.00) that I had rebuilt to stock specs (1.84, 1.54" valves), after I ground out the exhaust ports Thermactor bumps. Picked up 6 tenths, got into the high 13`s at 98 mph. I started running M/T 8 1/2x26-15 slicks once the mods started, so traction was not a problem. With the headers open, and the carpet & back seat out, it ran a best of 13.72@ 101 mph. After a while, I pulled out the C4, and replaced it with a 1988 5.0 Mustang T5, including stock clutch & flywheel (rebalanced to work with my 78`s 28 oz imbalance). Huge differance! it ran 13.5@104 mph on 205 70R14 whitewalls on stock steel rims, low 13`s on the slicks (1.8 60 foots), and with the headers open, and launching at 4800 rpm, I got a 12.80 @105 mph, and a 1.76 60 foot, and a few runs later, a broken axle. I had a lot of fun with that car!!------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed [email protected] 1.32 60 foot 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Headers really wake those low compression engines up. I don't think the cam will help nearly as much. Also recommended that to a guy on a Maverick forum, he got the camshaft (same one) anyway and complains cuz there's no difference at the track. I'm trying to remember the manifolds, but on the Maverick/Comet, one side isn't too bad, outlet is on the bottom just under the 3rd exhaust port, kind of like a funnel shape or something. The other side is just a straight log with the outlet on the rear. I cannot overstate the difference headers made on my car. More of a power improvement than any two mods I've done combined. Frankly, the factory manifolds suck.

OK,New headers are on, also new PS drop bracket, B&M ratchet shifter, and 2.5" exhaust. Sure sounds better, but not too loud. The old exhaust sounded like crap, but turns out the passenger side exhaust manifold was cracked in two. LOL Two more weeks and we'll post some new times. SteveW

The addition of a VS 600 Holley and a cast iron intake ran a best of 17.165 at 78.91 mph. A slight improvement but not much, as we predicted. A little cam is next on the agenda, but compression and exhaust will help the most. SteveW
Latest update!!! The new Simmit brand headers with 2.5" muffs and turn downs gave Maggie a traction problem. But, by driving it off the line and deep staging it managed a 16.648 at 93.20 mph in 87 degree air. I thi9nk the headers were the best mod yet! 74merc was right on this one! SteveW p.s. next mod will be some traction.

lookin good. I miss my car... I gotta get rolling again.Even with 4bbl and headers, mine still won't spin tires. I think it has a bit to do with the cam being retarded 4* in the 74 model... I'm thinking about putting a timing chain on it and advancing the cam back to stock 302 specs before I build it just because...
