I've got a leak coming from the trans on my brother's C4. The drivehsaft slip yoke has a small machined or drilled hole in the end of the yoke opposite the trans, pointed at the U-joint. It's losing enough fluid out of the hole to make it messy, but it's not pouring.

It's in a 66 Mustang with an early 70's C4 and the driveshaft/yoke is from a later car. I think it came from a Fox/LTD II.

What's causing the leak? The hole is there from the factory. Tailshaft bushing? Some internal seal?

BTW, I'll get some pics of the car soon. Just got it back from the chassis shop. Narrowed a 9" to fit, added a 8pt rollbar, mono-leaf springs and Cal-Tracs.

Any 28 spline FoMoCo yoke will fit any 28 spline trans.
That hole should not be there Dave.
Plug it with a set screw or some epoxy.

Hey Dave,

Some of the C4's had a rubber seal that fit on the output shaft and sealed to the inside diameter of the slip yoke in the area before the splines start. The slip yoke had the hole that you mentioned drilled in it. I can understand why the slip yoke needed the hole if the seal was on the output shaft, to prevent pressure buildup when the yoke slipped in. However, I can't imagine why they felt it was necessary to seal the yoke that way, it does not seem to make a lot of sense, but it was done on some years. Sometimes I think Ford engineers did a lot of drugs in the 60's and 70's. Alex is right though, plug that sucker.
