Had some trouble today with the 65 Fastback while going to a car show. Last night I checked all the fluid levels and all was great. I put the rad cap back on all the way (or so I thought), while driving to the show (about 30 miles distance) my temperature never got above 180, but when I got to the show and opened the hood the rad had blown over into the reserve bottle and over-filled it and it blew all over the engine compartment, it also looked like some fluid came out from around the cap. I thought I may not have properly tightened the cap (I am a bone head)so this is why it blew over, checked the level and it looked good. On the way home from the show, my temperature was stable at about 175 - 180 and all of a sudden it spiked to 230 - 240. I turned off the car dropped it in neutral and coasted to the side, I added 3 bottles of water and drove home with the temperature never going above 180, even after going W.O.T a couple of times. Opened the hood at home and all was great, let the car idle for 30 minutes in 80 degree weather and the temperature never got above 182. Decided to go to my friends house about 2 - 3 miles away, temp stayed at 180, went W.O.T and the car dropped off for a second then came back, temp still at 180. Got to Eric's house and the rad had once again blown over into the bottle and all over the engine compartment, but the temperature once again never got above 180, (checked the temperature gage, it is a Pro-Comp Auto-Meter 0 - 250 degrees, all is good). There are no bubbles in the rad fluid, the T-Stat is opening, water pump is fine. The only thing I can find that seems a bit out of wack, is the Rad cap. It is a 13 pound stant but it comes off very easy, and after running it and the car is hot (180) I can just pop it off with barley any release of pressure being heard and absolutely no rad fluid boiling out when I first crack the cap. Does it sound like this could be my problem? I am going to take the car to a local rad shop here in town and get them to pressure test the system, and that will tell me alot, but I would really appreciate all of your input and thoughts about this problem.

John,

It could be a sticking thermostat. Try a new one first, along with a new cap.

Well I did not have to take it to the rad shop to find the problem. When I fired it up and checked it this morning, I let it idle for about 15 minutes, then took the rad cap off, it smelled like I had a third exhaust pipe on the car and it was vented through the rad, also I have oil in the rad . So now I have top pull the heads and hope it is just a gasket and not the heads. Guess I will have a heck of a job ahead of me, trying to do this one handed . I will just have to go slow and do as much as I can and rest, do some more and rest and so on. I guess this is the price we pay for having these cars, it is not so bad just a real pi$$ off

Or maybe it's just a bad intake gasket near the water jackets. One can hope?

You must be like me, an eternal optimist. This is what I am really hoping for, but if it is the head gasket, so be it. I will just deal with it, then sit in the corner of the garage and cry

Good luck. In an attempt to cheer you up. The interior and doors of my car are wrapped up and haven't seen them in a year. The trans sits on a shelf, the hood in a corner, the trunk lid elsewhere, the original motor is on a dolly that when I walk by I swear it talks to me: " why, why, I was running good, put me back in, why why. " I would kill right now to only have a head gasket problem. Again, good luck!
