Well, any pointers you guys can give would be great! I'll be attending the all Ford race day, swap meet, and car show at the Sacramento Raceway this Sunday, May 1st.http://www.fordlovers.com My Lightning is pretty anemic compared to other Lightnings. I knew it was slower than most when I bought it (couldn't even do a burn off until I changed out the plugged cat back) but even with all the mods I've done to it, it's still slower than my buddy's stock pullied '99 Lightning. Now he runs a 4lb pulley like me and his truck runs circles around mine. When I had it dyno'd, my best pull was 347hp, corrected. Not very good for a truck weighing 5200lbs. My buddy with his '99 put down 387 horses to the wheels. Another bud with a 6lb pulley put down 406hp. Anyway, I'll be in full street trim with brand new Nitto 555 Extremes (daily street tire, not DR's) for my 18" rims. Except for the 58" traction bars, the suspension is stock. And I've just upgraded my transmission with a built Factory Tech Monster Box with billet 2400 stall converter. Obviously, since I don't have slicks I won't utilize the water box, but other than that, any help would be great! Do I foot brake it? Stage deep? How do you anticipate the green? Start going on the second to last yellow, right? Or is it the last yellow? I'd love to be in the low, low 13's, but realistically I'm sure it will be a lot closer to 13.5. I'd be happy to hit that...or better....but I know a lot of that depends on my 60' times. Any help would be welcome! Thanks! If you haven't raced before, keep it simple or you'll get overloaded. Pull in until the stage light just comes on and stop. Stare at the last amber ignoring everything else around you (including the other ambers). When that last amber comes on, release the brake, mash the gas pedal and save the hooting and hollering until after the race. It's all about consistency, so don't vary your routine. If you get hard on the brakes at the end, you can make the first return road cutoff. Shouldn't be a problem if you're running 13s. Sac has a narrow return road. Don't let your mind wander or you'll end up in the ditch. Good luck!

Stewart The main thing for the first time out is to enjoy yourself and don't take it too serious. I have been to the Sac raceway a couple of times when I have been over there seeing a mate of mine. They get a good atomsphere so enjoy.

when scott said leave when the last amber comes on, he meant the instant it flashes!! dont sit there and watch it burn. still if you have a bad light like .6xx etc. you might try deep staging. after you turn on the stage light, keep moving till the prestage light go's off. then leave on the last amber again. but the main thing is just relax and have fun. dont make work out of it. heck i raced all weekend and did not win a round!! but i had fun!!! ------------------ mike r racing is real everything else is just a game. 81 capri-302-7.25 @93mph 1/8 1.54 60 ft. http://community.prestage.com/Member+Pages/789.aspx M&M member #839

I would say Do not try deep staging. It slows the car down. The whole purpose of being shallow is to get a running jump at the timing system! What I like to do is light the top bulb, or the Pre Stage bulb and then stop. Clear your mind and then very slowly bump yourself into the Stage bulb. When the tree comes down, I watch it this way. bulb is coming on, Its on, Its going off. In your case, I would try leaving when the 2nd bulb is going off on your first time run. That seems to work well with alot of the street vehicles. If you go red, then change reading the tree to leaving when the 3rd bulb is coming on!!! Either way, green or red, just have a blast and who cares what everyone else says!

So you coming to town Stewart? Huh, huh, huh? I would advise going for the second turnout the first few times until you get an idea as to where the first one is. Nope! Having been to a few races at Sac with my buds these past few years, and even having been down the strip as a passenger, I've picked up quite a bit. Especially just from reading here at M&M and asking a Tim a ton of questions while sitting in the stands. So I already had a few of the "first timer" mistakes already filed away...like the first turn off, who has right of way at the end of the track, etc...but since this IS the first time I'll be lined up as the driver, it's nice being reminded of them! Thanks! I figure I'll do a quick, dry burn-off just to clean up the tires, then stage. I had heard from someone to leave in D2, but was leary of that advice, wanting to just take the OD off and roll into the gas quickly while in Drive. Thanks for confirming that for me, Alex! I'll be in full street trim, including my spare tire, but minus the tool box in the bed. I'll take that out tomorrow. One of my buddy's thinks I can break into the 12's if I nail my 60 foot times. I don't. I think because my truck is so slow compared to other L's, I'll be lucky to hit 13.5 or better. I guess I'll find out in a few days!! Thanks for the advice on the lights, guys. Steve, Tim, see you guys on Sunday! Stewart

Yeah, that's what I keep telling my buddy. He keeps saying, "12's man, 12's...think positive!" And I tell him I am thinking positive, and 13's are probably very positive for me! I point out that his '01, with all his mods, custom tune, and strong engine runs 12.8 consistantly. Not only is his engine not "tired" like mine, but he has a 6lb pulley. My 4lb pulley only made me as fast as a stock pullied '99 Lightning. That's pretty bad! Like I said, I'd love to be in the low 13's...and I'd be happy with 13.5 or better, but I'll probably be in the 13.8 to 14.3 range, yes? Stewart, just a couple other things, try to keep the coolant temp the same every pass, with a stock unit, just idle in the staging lanes till your turn. As mentioned above leave on the last amber, but make yourself REACT to the light, do NOT anticipate the light the light coming on. These will help you & your truck be consistant. Dont be concerned what the other lane is doing or not doing, run your race, let them worry about theirs.

Lots of good pointers about bracket racing, but I think Stew will be running the "fun/time trial runs" So he will get to keep running laps whether he wins or loses. The rest of us will be running fer da bucks. I'll be racing Mell's '66 since it's a Ford only race. But I think I'll be footbraking it, since that's what my car is and I'm used to FB'g. It'll be interesting how much it slows due to no T-brake launch and a BFD in the seat. SteveW
