Doing a freshen up on the Cleveland for this year (late, unfortunately) we found a substantial crack in the block.

It starts at the oil hole in the 4th main and angles up into the cylinder walls on both sides. Also the thrust bearing main was worn into the copper all the way around and none of the other mains were worn like that.

Fortunately I had another 4 bolt main block that was .020 over so we are filling it and having it bored out to .030.

My concern is what caused this and how long before its likely to do this again.

BTW, the crank is an internally balanced Crower piece.

Any thoughts?

It seems as if the converter clearance may be too tight Tom causing too much load on the thrust.
I would be looking at the adapter/bell housing indication/line up on the powerslide set up.

Alex,

The thrust surfaces were not worn, just the inside of that main bearing.

Would that still indicate a convertor clearance problem?

Its a JW ultrabell.

The crack ran up one side of the block and about halfway up the cylinder walls on both adjacent cylinders. I don't think I made that very clear.

The block side or the crank side of the bearing is worn?

All 360 degrees is worn into the copper.

This is only on the thrust main. The rest of the mains looked good. And the broken web is the next one back from the thrust main.

You had a align bore problem and the thrust cap did not fit straight.
When it was torqued, it either cocked causing undue stress or it was too tight.

Could be, I suspect.

Steve had main studs in the motor which I'm not sure are necessary on a 4 bolt Cleveland.

I'll ask if the shop will be checking the align bore on the mains.

A different block should take care of it, I hope.

That block had been used for many seasons and completely freshened every year till I got it. It had roughly 250 passes on it.

Guess I'm paying for not freshening it now.
