I know I've said this before,

But Fram's cheapo filters don't belong on a high performance engine!
Two races ago I changed the oil on Melissa's 408W and only had a Fram PH-8A available. She's noticed the oil pressure was low, and I said yeah it's that Fram filter. We lost one engine to insufficient oiling a couple years ago with a Fram filter.
So, today I fired it up cold and it idled with 48 psi. Changed the filter only to a NAPA Gold #1515 (same oil just a qt. low) and it idles at 60 psi cold.
Spend a couple extra dollars to protect your race engines. Thanks,

SteveW

p.s. I still use Frams on the daily drivers, but begining to question why? DUH

I was a big fan of them, until I've heard way to many stores like yours.

Hey steve. That explains why when I changed oil on my car from 20w-50w to 10w-30w full synthtic and picked up 10psi on my oil pressure. Only problem I am still using the Fram PH-8.

Fram makes a quality product. Always have. However, you should be using the correct filter. HP-1 for ANY high performance engine and the PH-8A on your daily driver. Same goes for any other engine as the HP series filters are designed for a High Volume oil pump. We have seen many "daily driver" filters on race motors have low oil pressure.

The Napa Gold filters are made by Wix.

I have to agree with the others, Fram sucks...I had the same issues as Steve and I have a stock oil pump not HV.

Just my opinion

I did my own testing on my vehicles. On a high mileage SUV (185,000 miles) I was changing the oil every 3 months with a Fram oil filter. It came out thick, black and smelled like burnt oil. I switched to a Mobil One filter as K&N didn't have one for this engine and shazam, 5 months later, oil still looked good, dark but clean and no burnt oil smell. I use K&N on my Stang and my son's V6 Stang and both go 5 months between oil changes.

No, It doesn't.
I left the same oil in the pan, just a quart less of it and it gained 12 psi with the filter change.
Try a quality filter with your new synthetic and you'll probably gain more oil pressure.

Also, the 408w is using a stock oil pump. Not a HV or HP pump.

I remember reading somewhere that in some tests the Walmart brand filter was actually better than the Fram for daily drivers. They calculated this based on filtration efficiency and pressure drop all that scientific stuff. So I have been using Wal-Mart filters with no problem.

When I ran Fram, it always took a few seconds for oil pressure to build. Starting using Carquest Red and Blue, both Wix, no problems at all. STP works fine, Motorcraft, no problems... every time I used Fram it was like starting after an oil change.

Something about the check valve leaking oil back into the pan... or so I've been told. Never took Oil Filter 101.

Mobil one filters are the best, period. Once you see the actual particles left in your oil after one pass with a conventional filter and then the Mobile one, you will be convinced. Independent test.

Steve..

Jerry Smith posted a list of Oil Filters about a year ago that someone had tested.. Basically said stay away from FRAM.. Both the NAPA filters (GOLD & CHEAPO) were good and almost identicle in performance..

Question: Is it adviseable to use a screen with your oil filter..

Don't know if that would have helped catch some of the fines of the ground up dist. gear in my 302,, but it probably wouldn't have hurt..

I had a Fram filter pop on my mighty Honda, and dump the oil on a grocery store parking lot.....
Never used Fram again.
