Please help. 64 Falcon, w/ a toploader 4 speed, and 302. Just replaced ring gear on flywheel. Why I was at it, new stock starter, starter solenoid, and battery cables. Tried to start........the solenoid will click, and then you will the hear the starter gear just spin, but not engage. The battery cables get very hot, and even smoked a bit. 99.9% sure I hooked the solenoid up the way it came off. Any ideas at all? This car is a wiring nightmare! GM alternator, a ignition kill switch on the inside of car, even though the keyed switch works just fine? Please help. THANKS, Jason.

Make sure the cable going from the battery to the starter isnt grounding against the starter block or headers is it an old cable? it could be shorting out. try your old seloniod.

If the starter gear is spinning it is most likely (although not 100%) that your electrical connections are fine, although I agree that you should check for contact with the headers.

Could be the bendix drive on the starter isn't kicking it out strong enough to engage the ring gear.

Could be the ring gear spinning on the flywheel (I had this happen once before).

Is the starter from (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, Advance, etc) or is it a good one? I've seen a failure rate as high as 1 out of 2 from the large discount houses. You may need to get a gen-u-ine Ford unit.

Thanks for all suggestions. I have triple checked to make sure it isn't grounded on something, and it's not. It is a "schucks" starter. Alex sold me a frpp, but I decided to wait, till I put a new motor in it. Any more ideas? Thanks, Jason.

Take the starter out and bench test it with some jumper cables and your battery.

I'm with Alex on this one but make sure you've got a good hold on that starter.I usually lay them on the ground and put my foot on them.Have the ground end of the booster cable hooked onto the starter somewhere and tap the postive onto the starter cable stud.

Hi. I have seen it happen when the battery was not charged enough. Actuating the solenoid takes a lot of energy.

Thanks for all the ideas. I suspect the starter for sure, and will hook up some cables to it, and see for sure..........good thing for the warranty I guess. The one off headers in this car sure makes it a pain in the a-- to do. Jason
